Jim Hamilton's stunning left foot volley against Celtic in January 2006 has been voted the SPL Goal of the Decade by a panel of judges made up of people from the Scottish football media. Hamilton beat off the challenge of Henrik Larsson to take the award.
Jim Hamilton's stunning volley for Motherwell against Celtic in January 2006 has been voted the Mitre SPL Goal of the Decade.
The first SPL goal was claimed by Eoin Jess of Aberdeen exactly 10 years ago today and a total of 5,934 goals have been scored since the league was established in 1998.
A judging panel that comprised John Hartson, Barry Ferguson, Mitre, Setanta Sports, The Sun newspaper and the SPL gave Hamilton's strike the nod ahead of Henrik Larsson's chip against Rangers in 2000 and Austin McCann's long-range effort for Hearts against Celtic in 2003.
The big striker himself reckons his super strike at Pittodrie should possible have been considered as well, and I may agree with him as I think it was a better goal to score from that distance.
It is probably just as well it wasn't left to a fans poll as we know that Larsson's goal would have won it, therefore it is good to see a fair vote get close to the right result.
