Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Newcastle Utd v West Brom

By Tyne-Talk
January 17 2010

Newcastle United take on West Bromwich Albion tomorrow night at St James' Park in their first of two encounters over the next 6 days. Tomorrow's league match marks the middle of the fixture list as both clubs begin to face their rivals for the 2nd time this season.

Newcastle host on the back of 2 wins and 4 draws in all competitions, whilst West Brom travel on the back of a defeat against rivals Nottingham Forest; but with 3 wins, 1 draw and 2 defeats from their last 6 games.

Newcastle will be without Peter Lovenkrands, who scored a hat-trick in midweek after he returned home to Denmark following the death of his father earlier in the week. Also absent will be Joey Barton who is still unavailable due to a foot injury. Alan Smith is expected to return to the side after recovering from an eye injury, whilst Danny Simpson is expected to make his play on the final day of his current loan contract with the club.

West Brom manager Roberto Di Matteo will welcome the return of Chris Brunt (illness) who will be making his 100th appearance for the club and Gianni Zuiverloon who has recovered from an ankle injury, whilst Ishmael Miller is a possible candidate for a place on the bench as he continues to make his comeback after a knee injury.

James Morrison remains West Brom's only long term absentee as he continues to recover from a heel injury and Abdoulaye Meite is on International Duty with the Ivory Coast in the African Nations Cup.

Fact: Newcastle United are unbeaten in their last 16 league games against West Brom.

Fact: West Brom will be looking for their 50th league goal of the season at St James' Park.

Head to Head: West Brom have scored 11 goals in the last 10 minutes of matches this season. Newcastle have scored just 1 goal in the last 10 minutes of a match this season.

This is arguably our most important game of the season. A win here, and we go 9 points clear of WBA and 5 points clear of Forest with a game in hand, or a defeat and we could be just 2 and 3 points above those teams with the pressure right back on us. Its going to be massive but like annie says, we must not lose first and foremost. A win would really set us up for promotion though!

For now, I'll be hoping for that! (Sm152)

Skipping footy practise to watch the match. Can feel the nerves building already. Hope we can keep the pressure on their players and prevent them from passing the ball to mutch, as i feel WBA are mutch better passers of the ball than we are.

2-2 Full Time. Not a bad result but I think West Brom were the better team. Unfortunately I didn't get to see the whole game but at least we've not lost so they've gained no ground on us. Another home game next in the league so we need three points from that!

pah, that last twenty min could have got us a winner, and that should have been a pen at the end, it really should. we played a very good team though, whose strengths were perfect to trouble us, and we could have been two down after an hour, so its probably fair enough.

who gives a monkeys for fair though? that ref wants hanging!!!

wasim, i'm guessing you were taking ustream, which dropped out after 70-odd minutes? we had chance after chance mate, we really did, but couldnt put one in. no howlers, it just didnt drop for our forwards. if we're being picky, nolan put a header straight at the keeper, and loven may have done better with a headed cutback.

still cant complain, they were great for an away side at st james this year. so many come to defend, this lot were full of football, no hoofing it long, great passing and movement.

we are in a real battle with brom and forest, one saving grace is that west brom arent as consistent as notts, but we have to get back on form ourselves or it wont matter, we'll be third in a month at this rate

We could have had a couple of penaltys, but as lmk says we could also have been more goals down. Fair result.

Team P GD Points
1 Newcastle 25 25 52
2 Nottm Forest 26 19 49
3 West Brom 25 24 46

So that's the top 3 as it stands now. Those two teams are putting pressure on us and we need to keep getting results, because we can't rely on them slipping up anymore.

I was indeed taking ustream lmk, but anyways, I'll take the draw. If we can win our next league, against Palace then I think we'll still be in a good position. The pressure will be on us, or hopefully not, as by the time we kick off on Wednesday both our rivals would have played already the day before. We need to work towards getting a signing or two now before our next game.

we play last again wasim? something the league (or rather sky) uses to increase the pressure on the team in front, by letting the chasers close in before kick off. we'll just have to put up with that. pretty sure we have another monday night game soon, against leicester. the idea is that the leaders are caught in the days before their own game, and have a chance to go back ahead when they play. great for neutrals, hard work for the team involved

Yeah, I agree lmk, it's hard for the team involved. Forest and WBA play on tuesday next week, while we at home to Palace the wednesday.

Any news on whether this was Simpson's last game for us, or is there a deal in place?

Well first and foremost, good to see some honest and not totally biased opinions. Credit where it is due, Both teams went for it. And i suppose on reflection we both may feel we should have had 3 pts.But a Draw it is, and on we both go.

Good luck for the rest of the season in the league.
And here's hoping we have a little more luck Saturday though.

We weren't the best tonight and West Brom looked the best and out played us. They attacked well and looked more dangerous than us. But not using it as a defence the referee was sh@t tonight and we should have had a couple of penalties.

The positive I take from the game is that once again we didn't play great and have yet hit top gear while West Brom looked at thier best and we still got a point

That actually, wasn't us at our best. Bednar has not been in the side that much and Miller was only making his 2nd appearence after a year out. So from a foward point of view these pair will hopefully get sharper. Czech was a replacement,Jara has been a midfielder and was at right back tonight, Tamas played only his second game, And Koren was also drafted in. So although we made a lot of changes, things will hopefully get even better.

That maybe wasn't your best team but you would have to admit that the performance was top class by West Brom and probably one of your best this season, where we were sh@t. But we still got the draw.

the passing on the break was premier league class and caused us problems we havent had very often this season. i think we may have gone 451 with nolan behind shola had this been expected, and it may have stemmed the flow. fair play though, if brom keep that up they'll be ok. perhaps forest are due a wobble, as we have had ours and so have brom

Sonner or later Forest will drop points and maybe go on a bad run, but I think they will be pushing for second, but then if Brom can keep that level of performance up then it will be a nervy finish to the league

It's going to be a nervy finish. I'm getting very wary of hearing that we're "nailed on for promotion." In fact, we're two bad weekends away from the playoffs-a very dicey proposition.

I think we will go up, but it is really close, drop a few points and go on a bit of a bad run an it could be the play-offs I just think when we do a bit more business in the market and have more competition for places like we had before we should be ok.

As long as the players don't think it is a guarantee then we should be fine

Other than the Simpson deal we seem to be going after players who are going to be squad players. Lets bring in somebody who will be a first team player and add something different

First Team players are going to be too hard to get to join. Sure, we might agree to a fee, but they player can easily block the move. No PL players that are good enough to push a player out of the starting XI will voluntarily join us and Ashley won't spend the money to get a player like Adam Johnson, Victor Moses, or even George Boyd (why more clubs aren't looking at him is staggering. He's 24 and is scoring with better success this year than he did in the last 2 years of lower-level football).

Ashley might toss enough out for the transfer fee, but he's not going to offer them the wages that were once offered to incoming players (see Kilgallon turning us down and Simpson not immediately signing). On one hand, that's a good thing as he's staying out of financial trouble. On the other hand, he's going to have to flash a bit of cash if he wants to sell the club this summer.

Re: Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Newcastle Utd v West Brom

It's a bit of a mess the club has been left in. Players coming in who are going to add to the squad will want parity to our current squad, if not more.

Given our average first team player is on between 30k-80k per week, it's too much money to throw about at present. As much as it looks like we'll be getting promoted at the first sign of asking, we need to be prepared for the alternative.

If we were to offer these wages and miss out on promotion, we would be in financial difficulties and be forced to sell again.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to sign the likes of Moses and Johnson; but I feel those sorts of signings are best made in the summer; where we know exactly where we're going to be.

Re: Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Newcastle Utd v West Brom

If we had the cash for players like Johnson and Moses, and I don't think we do as it would cost around 9 million to get both. These 2 players are not going to sign for a championship side so if we wanted them then we need to go after them in the summer.

As previously stated in another topic it is reported that we are going to have a Salary cap on new signing even when we are in the premiership of 30k a week.

Personally I don't think it is a bad thing, as we have paid big money for people who don't care. The only thing is we have to be given cash to go out and buy players and look for some up and coming players. The sort of players that we will be looking at will be around the 30k a week as clubs like Fulham are probably only paying that.
