Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Watford v Newcastle Utd

Why Watford will win: They have won six of their last eight home matches (beating Sheffield Wednesday, Preston, Scunthorpe, QPR, Sheffield United and Bristol City, getting a credible draw with Nottingham Forest and losing to Derby), while Newcastle are apparently unhappy with their (Newcastle's) away record, which makes two of us as Watford have not won on the road since 17th October, which is worse than Newcastle, who only have to go back to 9th December, not that Watford's away record is particularly relevant today. Also, it appears that Newcastle have a few injuries.

Why Newcastle will win: They are five points clear at the top of the Championship and will surely a field a quality line-up. Watford are not particularly impressive against out-of-form teams (if Newcastle can be considered 'out-of-form' due to their away woes) as they managed to lose at home to Derby (who had hitherto not won away, making it a bit of an upset bearing in mind Watford's home form before and after that match) in December and at Peterborough (it doesn't get any more embarrassing than a defeat to Peterborough) the following week, while they have drawn a couple of matches that they should really be winning. And Tom Cleverley is suspended.

I would not be particularly disappointed if Watford can get a draw.

I apologise for previewing the match like it is an FA Cup final, but for most teams in this division it is a rare opportunity to welcome one of the biggest clubs in the country to their ground, and to see those famous black and white stripes.

I really can't fathom how according to the Daily Mail Kevin Nolan has managed to "hurt his ankle in training earlier today". I didn't realise that teams train in the morning of matches. Indeed, I thought that they tend to spend the morning of matchday either travelling down or (having travelled down the previous night) relaxing in a hotel.

It is difficult to help but feel that this is the perfect time for Watford to play the biggest and strongest club in the Championship (as Newcastle have many injuries and have not won away since December), but like I said in my previous post Watford do not have the best of records in cashing in on advantages like today.

I will watch the first-half of my old team v Shay Given's new team, then my mum will give me a lift to South Kenton station, from which I will catch the 1:42pm train, which gets me to Watford High Street at exactly 2:00pm.

hopefully we will play with smith and guthrie in the middle with probably jonas and r taylor starting on the wings.

with brow away at derby three points here today could be a massive stride to auto promotion if they dont get anything but a win and we get all 3 guess well all have to wait and see how the afternoon unfolds

Would have been nice if Derby could have hung on but a great result for us and Forrest losing is class.

A few of us mentioned at xmas that Forrest were due a bad run and it has definately come since then.

Got a bit worried when they scored but 3 points is 3 points.

Another great result. We are getting closer and closer to gaining promotion. With Forest losing, our job may be easier. Well done to the lads though for getting the 3 points and doing what we had to do.

can i just point something out what a difference between a watford fan and most the leeds fans who come trolling through this forum. Gracious in defeat. good game, newcastle march on and good luck to watford with the rest of their season.

Great result and hopefully we can keeping getting the gap between us and 3rd place

what a difference the last two weeks have made. still work to do,but for both the second and third placed teams to catch us now would take great form from them and seriously bad form from us. a few more weeks like this last one and we'll be as good as up...

March is going to be the big month, if we get lucky with results we are as good as up, but if we lose a couple and the other teams go on a run then it is a scrap

Ifs and buts, but if we can win our game in hand and the home game against Forest then we would be 14 clear of them.
