Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Newcastle v Tottenham Hotspur

Newcastle United kick start their season tomorrow against Tottenham Hotspur at St James Park in a 5.30pm kick off. With a clean slate, both sides will be looking to make an impact after successful ends to the 2011/12 campaign
Spurs play their first Premier League game under the management of Andre Villas Boas, whilst Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has strived for consistency and will be hoping to build on the work of last season.
For Newcastle, Steven Taylor and Sylvain Marveaux are both available, as should be, captain Fabricio Coloccini who is expected to have recovered from a knock picked up against Cardiff last weekend. However, the game could come too soon for Demba Ba (calf), Papiss Cisse (hamstring), Hatem Ben Arfa (knee) and Sammy Ameobi (hamstring) who were all expected back from their respective injuries but could be doubts ahead of kick off.
New signing’s Vurnon Anita, Curtis Good, Gael Bigirimana and Romain Amalfitano are all available and could potentially make their competitive debut for the club.
AVB is expected to leave Lukas Modric, who has refused to play for the club in pre-season, out of the side as the want-away Croatian finalises a deal with Read Madrid.
Scott Parker (achilles) and Heurelho Gomes (ankle) are both unavailable, whilst Jan Vertonghen and Gylfi Sigurdsson could make their debuts.
Fact: Alan Pardew made 112 substitutions last season, failing to use all three of his subs in just 2 games.
Fact: Spurs beat Newcastle 5-0 in their last game which took place in February at White Hart Lane.

Let's hope for a score similar to the reserves match! (Um it was 5-1 at the half when I wrote this, that's the score I'm hoping for, not the 6-4 final!)

I really am delighted with the win. As stated above more so because Spurs could potentially be our rivals and also because we weren't at our best for much of the game. I thought Ben Arfa was brilliant. Fantastic gift from the team with Eid being today :-)
It wasn't a classic today, and our players were off form, Tiote and Cabaye looked off the pace, but I don't think they had a much off a pre season. Taylor returning after such a lay off. The first game of the season is always tricky and by looking at the results yesterday anything could have happened to us.
It was a massive 3 points and well done to the lads, Spurs will be up there so to grab 3 points is great. Ben Arfa added that little bit of flair when it was needed
