Jean-Alain Boumsong is in Newcastle today after agreeing terms and passing a medical with the Magpies.

Newcastle Boss Graham Souness has already confirmed that Celestine Babayaro will be coming to the club and Boumsong will be the second.

Souness has had to strengthen his defence with Newcastle currently holding the 2nd worst defensive record in the league. The Scot sees the £8 million signing of Boumsong from Rangers the perfect way to do this.

Souness said:

"I can confirm that we have an agreement with Glasgow Rangers and an agreement with the player, and the agreement we have with him is a five-and-a-half-year deal.

"Jean-Alain Boumsong has an agreement with us, we have an agreement with Glasgow Rangers and I can confirm as we speak that he is having his medical."

Boumsong’s agent, Willie Mackay also confirmed that Rangers accepted an offer for the French defender.

Mackay said:

"That's right. It was agreed this morning. Everything has been sorted out and he is having his medical now. He will become a Newcastle player tomorrow".
