27-year-old Spannish star Albert Luque has been told to "cheer up" by Newcastle United caretaker manager Glenn Roeder, if he wants to win back his place in the first team.

Luque joined the Magpies in the summer for £9.5m, but recently went back to his home country for a week after he was left out of the last two games.

Glenn Roeder: "It's no good him going around with a long face. We want players that are happy.

"Now Albert has come back we are trying to bring him back into the fold."

Albert Luque said whilst he was in Spain: "The truth is, if you don't go to Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool or Manchester United, the other English teams play a direct game with force.

"Talent is not what Newcastle want at the moment. The only thing they want is those who run 100% and forwards who fight for direct balls from the defenders."

Roeder replied to these comments: "Albert has not taken any liberties with his comments and they are very controlled.

"Yet for him to say I only want runners and high balls is simply not true, as anyone who was at Aston Villa will testify. I don't want that kind of football and neither do the Newcastle fans."
