Old Trafford Triumphs
Another Chelsea win

For some peculiar reason, Chelsea have always been more comfortable playing at Old Trafford than at Anfield. Here below are the twenty wins that the Blues have recorded at Manchester United. I have not included the happy trip to this same venue in April 1970 when the west Londoners also won an FA Cup final replay! The matches below are all from the top flight, unless otherwise stated.
7th November 1908: Manchester United 0 CHELSEA 1
The lethal George Hilsdon converted from the penalty spot halfway through the first half, while Jack Whitley and his defence achieved a clean sheet.
17th January 1914: Manchester United 0 CHELSEA 1
Charlie Freeman scored the only goal with only twenty minutes remaining. James Molyneux and his defence emulated the efforts of Jack Whitley from 1908.
3rd January 1920: Manchester United 0 CHELSEA 2
The prolific Jack Cock scored twice in the first half for high-flying Chelsea. Molyneux and his defenders Bettridge and Harrow again achieved a shut-out.
14th December 1957: Manchester United 0 CHELSEA 1
Ron Tindall scored five minutes from the end for mid-table Chelsea. This was one of the last home outings for the doomed Busby Babes.
26th August 1959: Manchester United 0 CHELSEA 1
Jimmy Greaves's first half goal separated the two teams. Reg Matthews and his defence achieved a rare shut-out for mediocre Chelsea.
2nd March 1968: Manchester United 1 CHELSEA 3
Bobby Tambling helped Chelsea to a half-time lead. Then Kidd equalised before Baldwin and Osgood scored for the visitors. George Best missed a penalty.
24th August 1968: Manchester United 0 CHELSEA 4
The Blues led 3-0 at the interval against the European champions! Tommy Baldwin scored two of those goals. The referee was also called Peter Baldwin!
6th December 1969: Manchester United 0 CHELSEA 2
Ian Hutchinson scored two first-half goals past former Chelsea player, Alex Stepney. Our manager Dave Sexton would work at Old Trafford ten years later.
22nd January 1972: Manchester United 0 CHELSEA 1
Peter Osgood scored early in the second half. Peter Bonetti, John Dempsey, Ron Harris, and Dave Webb all emulated their clean sheet from December 1969.
17th September 1977: Manchester United 0 CHELSEA 1
Big Bill Garner scored in the second minute. The ever-reliable Ron 'Chopper' Harris was the only survivor from the five victories of 1968, 1969, and 1972.
9th April 1986: Manchester United 1 CHELSEA 2
Kerry Dixon scored at the start of the second half, Jesper Olsen equalised from a penalty, and then the prolific Dixon provided a last-minute winner.
28th September 1986: Manchester United 0 CHELSEA 1
Kerry Dixon imitated Bill Garner by scoring in the second minute. Tony Godden then saved penalties from both Jesper Olsen and Gordon Strachan!
25th November 1990: Manchester United 2 CHELSEA 3
An own goal from Gary Pallister and a strike from Andy Townsend gave Chelsea an early 2-0 lead. In the end, a Wise penalty was needed to restore the lead!
5th March 1994: Manchester United 0 CHELSEA 1
Gavin Peacock got booked but then he scored halfway through the second half, as Chelsea achieved a league double over a team that would win the 'Double'!
2nd November 1996: Manchester United 1 CHELSEA 2
A Mike Duberry header gave Chelsea the half-time lead. Luca Vialli then beat the offside trap to race through and double the lead, just beyond the hour mark.
1st December 2001: Manchester United 0 CHELSEA 3
Melchiot provided the visitors with an early lead. The dynamic duo of Hasselbaink and then Gudjohnsen added more goals. Carlo Cudicini kept a clean sheet.
26th January 2005: Manchester United 1 CHELSEA 2 [Carling Cup]
Frank Lampard helped Chelsea to a lead at the interval. Giggs equalised, before Duff scored direct from a late free kick to send Chelsea through to the final.
10th May 2005: Manchester United 1 CHELSEA 3
A long-range strike from Tiago cancelled out a goal from van Nistelrooy. Then in the second half, Eidur Gudjohnsen and Joe Cole scored for the champions.
3rd April 2010: Manchester United 1 CHELSEA 2
A cute strike from Joe Cole gave Chelsea the lead at the halfway stage. Drogba doubled the advantage as Chelsea now looked set to win the league again.
5th May 2013: Manchester United 0 CHELSEA 1
A late close-range effort from Juan Mata decided this contest. The Red Devils were lack lustre and Chelsea took full advantage in the second half.
