Chelsea legend Frank Lampard made an emotional return to Stamford Bridge in this Carabao Cup tie whereupon his dangerous Derby County team were a little unlucky to lose by the odd goal in five. They could easily have forced a penalty shootout which they successfully achieved at Old Trafford previously. They also did themselves no favours by conceding two own goals, and yet they also quickly bounced back with equalisers. It took Cesc Fabregas to stroke home the winner shortly before the interval. Thereafter the hosts ensured that they would go into November still unbeaten in league and cup, but late Derby pressure almost necessitated a spot kick resolution. In the end, Chelsea progressed to the quarter finals to host in-form Bournemouth in December.
