Ipswich Town striker Darren Bent won his battle with Town goalkeeper Lewis Price, netting in the England - Wales under 21 game.

Bent played 71 minutes on Friday night, coming on for Carlton Cole in the 19th minute after he was forced off with a ankle injury.

Wales had been under pressure for most of the first half but England were unable to find the find the target until Bents arrival on the pitch Wales goalkeeper Lewis Price had been largely untested but within a minute of being on the pitch Bent had fired a shot just centimetres wide.

The Welsh did come close to opening the scoring just before the break, David Vaughan ran through the England defence and struck his shot perfectly but only managed to his the wood work.

0-0 at the break but that score line lasted less than a minute into the second half, Pennant pouncing on a Welsh error and flicking the ball over the Welsh defence for James Milner to run on too and put past Lewis Price.

Price again stopped England scoring denying Stead twice and Milner, Stewart Downing also came close scoring but some how sent the ball wide from 12 yards.

England did score a second goal with 27 minutes to go, Downing sent in the cross which Darren Bent put past Price to score his 7 goal for the under 21 side.

Wales almost pulled on back in the 90th minute, Vaughan’s effort taking a deflection and going over the England bar.

England U21: Carson, Hunt, Johnson (Taylor 83), Davenport, Harding, Pennant (Whittingham 75), O'Neil, Milner, Downing, Cole (Bent 19), Stead. Unused Subs: Kilgallon, Lonergan, Baines, Hinshelwood.
