Report: Town Vs Stoke
Ipswich Town extended their lead at the top of the championship table to three points after beating Stoke City 1-0 at Portman Road yesterday.
The best attacking side in the league met the best defence in the league and the best attacking side won with just the one goal, Shefki Kuqi scoring his 12th of the season to give Town the points and extended their lead in the championship to five points for a few hours at least.
Town dominated the first half but for all the pressure and chances they only managed the one goal, Shefki Kuqi scoring in the 34th minute chipping in Ian Westlake’s pass over Simonsen in the Stoke goal.
Town continued their domination after the break apart from a 5 minute spell when Stoke pressured the Town defence but failed to find a goal, partly due the force field that seemed to of arrived around the Greene King stand end goal which sent most shots up and over the bar.
Darren Bent had been playing under par all afternoon but nearly made up for his poor performance with 5 minutes to go, Simonsen keeping Bent’s 25 yard effort out with the palm of his hand sending it over the bar.
With only Sunderland winning from the rest of the top four and moving up to 2nd in the process in the 3pm kick offs Town had their lead at the top of the table cut to just 3 points, Wigan drop to second on 47 points after losing 1-0 at Burnley, Reading drop to 4th after losing 3-0 against Preston behind Wigan on goal difference.
