Hartlepool United have added a huge presence to their squad by signing Iceland international Armann Bjornsson from Norwegian club Brann Bergen. Pools have strong links with Brann and the deal is being hailed as a major coup at Victoria Park, where the new lad watched as his new team-mates unluckily went down to Burnley in the Carling Cup on Tuesday night.
The 28-year-old says the move is the next step in the development of his careeer and he will be in the squad for Saturday’s home League One game against so-called big club Norwich.
Bjornsson is the second Scandinavian to join Pools in recent weeks following midfield man Jon-Andre Fredriksen.
Bjornsson can play in defence or attack, and it remains to be seen which position he will occupy with Pools.
But as a utility player, a man with his experience and his size, even with only four international caps, must be a major asset.
Well done to IOR for backing Chris Turner since the end of last season. Two home defeats out of two in League One so far perhaps suggests their gamble is not paying off.
But the away form has been terrific and the performance in defeat against Burnley suggests Pools are not going to struggle this season.
