Ricky Sbragia has said that David Healy has an important role to play as Sunderland look to move up the Barclays Premier League table. Healy has hardly featured since moving to Wearside from Fulham in August, starting just one game for the Black Cats.

But Sbragia has told Northern Ireland's record goalscorer that he will get his chance this season, and that he will not be allowed to leave the Stadium of Light.

Healy came off the bench to set up Sunderland's equaliser against Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Sbragia said: "I've told David I don't want him to go. I know what he can do, I know he will pop up and score goals. I said to him, 'It's a long season, the chance is there, you've got to knuckle down and get on with it.'

"Dave's done well in training. He's not started a lot of games for us but recently he's turned the corner, he's trained extremely well and he deserved the chance against Boro.

"Unfortunately for him, the two front players have done reasonable well, they are scoring goals so it's difficult for him."

Healy added: "I'm pleased to be back in the fold. Hopefully I've got something to offer the new manager."

Healy is quality,he has been vastly underused since moving to sunderland.......I'm a big fan of Healy so would be good to see him play more often.

I'm sure he's a good player - not sure about Premiership level though. He's never going to get a chance, for me, and the majority of Sunderland fans Cissé and Kenwyne Jones will start every time.

Healy will only get a chance either playing on the wing, as a sub or perhaps on the wing in place of andy reid.
