Player of the Season Voting Still Open

Total Tranmere brings you all the contenders for the three awards available this season, all the ways you can vote for the Official Tranmere Rovers Player of the Season, and how to be there on the night the awards are awarded! Also to be won, are awards for young player of the season and goal of the season.
For those that haven’t done so yet, you can still vote in the Official Player of the Season Awards for the 2007-08 season with the results to be announced at the Club’s Player of the Season Awards Dinner on Monday 28th April.
There are three Award categories in which you can vote and below we detail each one and give you perhaps an idea of who might be the leading candidates in each category……
Player of the Season
This is the top award given to the Player that the Fans think has been the star performer during the course of the season and in our eyes there are a number of potential winners this time around as Rovers make that final push for a play-off spot.
Goalkeeper Danny Coyne has been a revelation between the posts this season following the comedy antics of Gavin Ward last season and has kept Rovers in matches on numerous occasions with the two most notable moments being his penalty save in the final minute of the FA Cup win at Chesterfield and a last minute wonder save away at Doncaster that preserved a priceless and deserved point in a 0-0 draw.
The ever-reliable Ian Goodison has been a rock at the back once again this season for Rovers, a point proven by his four match absence through suspension in January which saw Rovers concede eleven goals in that time.
Although he is prone to the odd moment of madness such as the tackle that earned the red card at Crewe and the penalty he gave away at Oldham more recently, it’s fair to say that without him and his leadership at the back Rovers may not be in the position they are.
The other two main candidates for the award would have to be the central midfield pairing of Steven Jennings and Paul McLaren. Jennings in particular has looked a different and much improved player since returning from his loan spell at Hereford last season whilst McLaren has been the assist king and is currently top of the assists table for League One.
Young Player of the Season
It’s unclear what age constitutes young but with the loss of Steve Davies for most of the season and the limited chances for Craig Curran this season, there are only a small number of candidates for this award.
Andy Taylor who was initially on loan at the Club from Blackburn but has since signed permanently in January, must be a contender in this category for his excellent and consistent performances at left-back.
Calvin Zola could still be classed a young player at the age of 24 and he has been much improved when he has played this season. Limited chances for Mike Jones mean he probably won’t win the Award but the signs are that he could be a future winner.
Goal of the Season
As ever there a number of candidates for the Goal of the Season award with two or three that stick in the mind more than the others. My personal top four, in no particular order, are as follows…..
Steve Davies v Yeovil (A):
It’s the 94th minute, Tranmere are 1-0 down at Yeovil and need a goal to preserve what would then be a three match unbeaten run. Step forward Steve Davies with a free-kick that he perfectly executed into the top corner of the net to earn the draw.
Andy Taylor v Crewe (A):
Taylor put Rovers ahead at Gresty Road with a superb strike from just inside the penalty area on the half volley.
Jennison Myrie-Williams v Leeds Utd (A):
A massive following of Rovers Fans witnessed this goal as Myrie-Williams ran on to a flick-on by Ian Moore, turned inside two defenders at the same time and curled a great shot into the top left hand corner of the goal to send the Rovers fans wild.
Antony Kay v Carlisle Utd (H):
A superb, almost acrobatic effort from Kay put Rovers 2-0 just before half-time against a well placed Carlisle side and was certainly a goal that will be talked about for a long time had it happened in the Premier League.
There are obviously a number of other candidates for the Goal of the Season Award and that is up to you the fans to decide.

As mentioned above, the Player of the Season Awards Dinner takes place on Monday 28th April at 7.00pm and costs £30.00 per ticket which includes a three course meal and entertainment for the evening.
