Tranmere Rovers v Huddersfield Town - Match Thread

By Deadly Submarine
April 19 2008

This is the place for you to post all your pre and post match views on Tranmere's trip to Huddersfield as well as any happenings during the game if you have been unable to travel to the game yourself. If you have someone at the came giving you updates and views, why not share it with us here as the game progresses?

Huddersfield Town Match Thread

At Total Tranmere, we always like to take note of feedback from the users of the site and respond to it in the best way we can.  One thing we have picked up on more recently is that after Tranmere Games there seem to be a lot of different threads that get started about the same game.

As a result of this feedback, from now on we will be introducing Match Threads for every occasion when Tranmere play.

Stadium Huddersfield

Tranmere are of course away at Huddersfield Town today for their penultimate away game of the season but if you're not going to the game, why not join in the banter right here while the game is going on?

Maybe if you have a friend or family member texting you from the game you can post their views here for others to see as the game progresses.

Why not also use this facility to discuss other League One games and scores that kick-off at 3.00pm which may or may not have an effect on Tranmere too.

What you discuss below is up to you but hopefully it can all be focussed on one thread to make it easier for everyone to use.

Huddersfield predictions and team

What are your predictions for Huddersfield and what team would you like to see?

Personally, I'd go with a 4-4-2 formation of:

Coyne

Holmes Chorley Goodison Taylor

Shuker Ahmed Jennings Davies

Greenacre Zola

Subs: Achterpuss, Mullin, Moore, Curran, Gornell

I reckon we'll sneak it 2-1, with goals coming from Danny Holmes (if he plays!) and Zola

4-4-2

Coyne

Stockdale Chorley Goodison Taylor

Williams Mullin Jenno Davo

Moore Greenace

Subs Achto Kay Anadin Shuker Curran

Rovers win 3-1

Coyne

Stockdale
Chorley
Goodison
Taylor

Shuker
Jennings
Kay
Davies

Greenacre
Moore

My Prediction though is a 0-0 draw lol!

Must win, even though there isnt nothing to play for!

Even though Ronnie still thinks there is a chance!

Well your the ones should be saying its a must win,

Lets say we pick up 0 points from last 3 ( which we wont )

Are you saying to me , ronnie wil be getting new contract?

However, it would be nice to win!

Re: Huddersfield predictions and team

I haven't said its a must win.

If Ronnie plays some reserve players to see what they're like for next season, gives Ahmed a go etc I won't be complaining if we get 0 points.

As Mikey says - no-one has said it's a must win game but while there is mathematically still a chance then we should be looking at playing our strongest team.

I'm pretty sure certain fans are hoping we lose the last three games just to get rid of Ronnie!

Myles, are you complaining above that Ronnie still thinks we are in with a chance?

If he had come out and said it was all over even though it was still mathematically possible you would be having a go at him for that so he can't win!

We want them to get relegated and to sign steve wilson back!

Why would we want our team to loose?

We just know ronnie isnt the right man! As you just find it abit difficult to realise and accept that Ronnie IS not good enough!

Give him a new deal next season and we wil get 9thish again ( that is average position of last 3 seasons!)

That's a bit of a naive statement. Just because Hereford, Peterborough are a league lower it doesn't mean anything really. Posh have spent more than most clubs in our league and even the league above this season. Hereford are playing better football than most people in our league and have done all season. I cerianly didn't expect us to over-come Hereford. Also, personally, I dont think that we are here for the cup. Yes it is important for financial reasons but the League is our mission.

You say that Brian took us further than Ronnie did, but did he? He never got us promoted so really 3rd or 20this neither here nor there. The difference in prize money is not alot in the grand scheme. If you look at where te squad and the club was when Brian left, it pays what he had done previously into insignificance. It is all very well failingin the playoffs but the next season showed that he could not maintain that standard.

Today was just terrible however I don't blame it on Ronnie - once they have crossed the white line he can do no more.

We where the better team today, but when we got it in the right areas we struggled to do anything with it.

Shuker failed to beat the first man in all of his corners. (Ronnies fault?)

u dnt seem 2 have a clue nath!! its not moore looses concentration at the bak atleast once a game, its not moore who isn't willing to shoot no matter how close to goal he is! i would say its 90% percent down to the players!! with the exception of 2 or 3, we are a league 1 team!! i admite ronnies signins have been a bit suspect in my opinion, but after some of the performances this year if we went up it would b an injustice! we need atleast 4 new players if we r realisically in with a chance of an automatic spot! not a new gaffer!

I was watching the progress in BBC 'Live Text' and I was bemused as to how we were losing. we had loads of corners and for the majority of the game had 35%/65% possession in our favour. At ahlf time we had had lots more shots than them too. I notice that Jenno registered a 30 yard shot on target today.

No its not Ronnies fault when they step out onto the pitch, but like someone said on the radio,

What does he teach them in training? I see some teams pass the ball to wingers or through the middle, we just get the ball and whack it foreard to two small forwards. Maybe some of the players dont respect him enough!

and even more people are edging the way that ronnie doesnt derseve another contract!

3 defeats on the trot!

Southend to come who are the in form team! and Northampton the week after, we could finish as low as 13th!

and everyone on TT, who thinks that is good is abserloutly ridcoulous!

Ronnie will go, if he looses his next two for definant, and im cofident he will go even if he picks up 3 points

Mate, i believe lorraine was waiting until it was mathematically impossible to reach the playoffs..
all i can say is that, i believe the will to fight for points has gone, and when that has gone their something seriously wrong, as nathan pointed out before i do believe some of the players dont like the way his tactics are put across, and i think he cant get the best out of certain players..
i do believe ronnie has 2 games left in charge of tranmere, and not 2 wins, 2 draws, 2 defeats is going to change teh outcome

People are entitled to an opinion but when that is in the form of abuse aimed at people who disagree as happened today at the game then it is out of order.

Certain Fans like those today we are better without.

On the game, we deserved at least a draw but didn't get it. Sh*t happens and we just get on with it.

I'd rather be Tranmere than Rotherham or Bournemouth right now that's for sure.

Since we have been in League One our average position is 11.4. Ronnie finished above that last season. Brians average was 9.6. That too is above our avergage although his 18th was the biggest contributor to our average being as low as it is. Take note that Ronnie finished above Brian's average last season.

Yes super white army your correct there!

But he did go on winning streaks, and wins games, and had cup runs, and got us to playoofs, and took us from 21st to 8th!

and as people are quite pety, you think 18th from 9th is good, what is 21st to 8th ?

and then got 3rd place!

Ronnie Moore will be going in the summer, Tactics wrong, cant win from behind, Subs are laughable, Football is pathetic!

and we cant even beat teams who are worse than us!
What team do you expect us to beat? every week people think we should win about 2 of the 46 games, what games do you EXPECT US TO WIN?????

because i expect us to win againts teams who are lower standard of players than we have, teamfs from 7th and lower!

But people expect us to win againts vale at home thats it!

And so what if i went to wigan 2day ? We have nohing to play for wanyway! Doesnt meen were not tranmere fans? So when you go on holiday and miss a tranmere game, does that meen your not a fan ?

Your all getting strssed because you KNow hes going!!!!

Who cares where we finish, 7th is the same as 20th now - it doesn't matter.

This club will not progress anywhere until it keeps a manager for a minimum of three years.

IF we get rid of Ronnie next year is going to be a year of building a WHOLE new squad for a new manager. Then the year after will be like this year, taking out some of the weak links and replacing them (E.G Danny Coyne in for Ward) and then when we only finish 7th the whole process will start again because fans like you are pulling this club down.

Absouloutely spot on, Great post Sub.

Ok today i snapped out on one certain fan and i immaturely put v-signs at him, the only reason i did that i was frustrated i can't stand how people can turn on Ronnie this easy? This man has done nothing wrong.

We are a League One club, people expect us to be topping the league, and to be in teh Championship.

Ronnie has done well so far, Last season he virtually got a whole new squad in, and managed to achieve an 8th place. This season i said at the beggining of the season i would be satisfied for a Top half finish, which now looks likely.

Also, It hurts Ronnie as much as it hurts us fans getting beat, because this Man loves this club and if you look at his career record he's been in and otu of this club for around 30 years being a coach, player assistant manager and now manager. He loves this club and we won't get another manager who will be as passionate about this club as him.

Also whats the point in getting a new manager?, we are not going to get no where by having a new manager every two years. Our fans aim far to high and expect a lot more.

And always tend to say ' i pay money to watch this'

Well thats your choice to pay and if you don't want to pay then don't come simple as that. Its their choice. As Mike has said we are better without these idiots.

Ok today i suppose i was out of order doing what i did, and feel deeply affended by being labeled as a part timer basically, Ok i may have not been to many away games this season because im nto working i can't afford to go home and away every week? Ask any of my close mates i do my best to attend away games, and im bitterly dissapointed a grown man has come up to me and abused me.

Get behind Ronnie please, we'll end up no where getting a new manager every two years.

Until someone better comes along for the job there is no point in changing gaffer, especially when he has done nothing wrong. Loosing our two wingers for the majority of the season lrft the task comparable to trying to win the grand national with a lame horse.

Ideal scenario for me is that We have a fully fit squad next season, win the league with Ronnie in charge and for Nathan to take to Prenton Park pitch and issue a full appology to Ronie for doubting him in front of a sell-out who will heckle him.

chesterfield,bradford,walsall,leeds,oldham,swindon,forest,crewe,donny.

That is a really a poor amount of away games this season, plus 22 home games, and 2 cups games at homes!

Really Poor fan Mikey!!!

You wouldnt be getting this wound up if you knew for 100% Ronnie was staying!

The reason we should be beating teams from below 7th, as i think our team should win againts those teams and we have a better team than:

Walsalll
carlise ( Ronnie admitted) ( even though there 2nd or 3rd)
oldham
yeovil,northampton,huddersfield,crewe,bournmouth,vale,cheltenham,bristol rovers,gillingham,milwall,luton,swindon,orient Birghton.

Yes you cant win every games, but those the type of games were Ronnie and Yourselfs would think we can win today!

Stop making out like our team is Vales!

And i forgot not going to an away game is a crime?

i DONT KNOW HOW YOU all say walsall have a better team than us it really annoys me , how do they ? Just compare the players ask a neutral at the start of season were would you expect us to finish and where you would expect them to finish!

Perhaps football is too complex a sport for you to understand. If it went on the ability of the players at the beginning of the season then it would be easier for chairpersons to take gambles on expensive squads wouldn't it. There are form factors, when abouts you play teams, things like weather conditions, pitch conditions and the ability of the manager. Also there is the factor of a team gelling. Just think about it Nathan.

And the reason i didnt go todays game, as its not compulsary, and i chose to go to wigan!

So what if i didint go 2day!!! There has been times this season you ahvent been to an away game and i have, but i dont go on lol

Why cant you realise, its not just me and myles who dont rate Ronnie!

Yeh your correct some managers do need more than 2 years, but when you have seen two years of football with Ronnie, you want him to leave!

And i know Little isnt coming back, but end of day he did better job, and yet again, his cups runs werent laughable unlike ronnies!

Mikey The team doesnt need Rebuliding, Yet again your making out like are team is vales!

We have a good team, all we need is a few more good players but WITH A FRESH APPROACH!

The team is not like 05-06 season, it has some class players there, imo and some other opinions we need a new manager!

Which bit says the team needs rebuilding?

If Ronnie stays only 2 or 3 additions are needed.

If a new manager comes we'll see at least 6 new players to fit his style of play. I think you fail to understand this.

You are all sticking up for Moore when you can't seem to accept that he's not a very good manager. I thought it was a great appointment but now i'm not so sure.

Yes he's Tranmere through and through and yes you won't find a manager more passionate about Tranmere than he is, but to be honest I think the managers abilty is more important than his passion. And even if he doesn't have a previous affiliation with the club, a manager will naturally develop a passion for the club he's at. There isn't one manager in the country who isn't passionate about the club he is in charge of. Unfortunately Ronnie talks the talk due to his great passion for the club, but doesn't walk the walk.

I'm not one of these fans who thinks were a top of the half championship team, but I do believe were more than capable of sustaining ourselves in the bottom half of the championship, which is reflected in the fact that I think we've only finished outside the top half once since we were relegated.

The thing about Moore is he has the ability to sign good players: Kay, McLaren, Shuker, A Taylor etc however he doesn't have the ability to organise them into promotion challenging team. This season, the problems from last season have not been addressed - we've won the same amount of games from behind - 1, we still don't score eough goals, we dont get results away from home - 2 points since Leeds and we've won less away games than Huddersfield for example, it's fine beating Leeds but not if you go off and lose to Oldham,Swindon, Bournmouth and Huddersfield amonsgt others. We also dont play for the first 15 mins of second half's and young players such as Curran and Jones never get a chance.

All those problems are Moore's responsibilty to sort out and he simply doesn't sort them out. He behaves as if he has no responsibilty for anything that goes on in matches and doesn't seem to acknoledge its his job to sort out problems such as "We've got to score goals when were on top", yes Ronnie we all know that, but its your job to sort it out so why do you leave the shocking Greenacre on the pitch, who did absolutely nothing for 90 minutes today?

The reasons why Moore is not a very good manager are he doesn't make changes that are obviously required, he doesn't give youngsters a chance, his tactics appear to be just hoof, he doesn't take responsibilty for anything and he can't organise the team.

I can understand people saying changing manager would be pointless as we have to spend another two years at this level, but Ronnie won't get us promoted - he gets tactically out classed every game- Schofield coming on to day was an example of it - he did nothing to counter it and he caused all sorts of problems. The frustrating thing is that the sqaud we've got is more than capable of getting promoted, there aren't many stronger first choice 11's on paper, we just haven't got the manager to do it. Ronnie will keep us around 13th to 8th, he has the players but not the abilty to organise them or make changes when they matter and that i'm afraid is why Ronnie isn't good enough. Great player, Great guy - not so good manager.

totally agree, fantastic post, and i couldnt have put it in a better way than that!
Ronnie i believe does want teh best for the club, but he wont get the best out of it.
hes just not capable
i agree with the fact that he doesnt take responsibility because i believe most of the things that happen, he just says ' we need to score more goals'
' we are 12 goals short'
how does he know how many points 12 goals will accumalate i just think a change of a manager, is needed.. Reason??
well..
hes given us 2 years in which no improvement has been made he also finished top10 with oldham, he cant go that extra step into the playoffs, which is why i can see a 3rd season being a repeat if lorraine makes a mistake in offering him a new deal

No, you couldn't have put it better, you dont have the ability to and neither does Nathan. If you posted like that you wouldn't be nearly as tedious to endure.

I think that his downfall is that he has his favourites and he is usually too late to make the subs in a game.

However, I think that his ability to attract players is great, his potential to motivate is great and I think it will improve even more as he stays on. I think Moore will make more of an impact next season, Taylor will and with the wingers firing all I can see is us finishing at least in the playoffs.

I know this is a bold suggestion but, I dont like Goodison's sulky attitude and i would like to see either Kay or Coyne as captain. However, this is not possible (I know) because it might effect Ian's game which is pricless. I just dont think he shows as much passion as those mentioned. Although I haven't seen every game this season obviousl.

I don't think a captain needs to show passion, I think they just need to show fight and determination. For what it's worth, I don't think we have a proper leader at the club.

As for Faulkner, you say we've made no progress, although we quite clearly have since Little left, although that probably escapes your selective memory.

Ronnie Moore does have his weaknesses, every manager does, SWA does well to highlight them but he's got plenty of positives too.

Look at how some players have improved under his tenure. The likes of Davies, Jennings and Zola are almost unrecognisable to the players who started the 06/07 season and are now key players in our first eleven.

He also has a brilliant eye for top players, such as Kay, Shuker and Andy Taylor, as meantioned. Once he does have the chance to get the majority of these players on a pitch fully fit we'll be able to see the team that he's built. Until then it's increadibly difficult to judge.

yes i do want him out, but im not doing ronnie out chants..
my opinion is that ronnie moore is poor, its not just my opinion anymore though, because lots others are like that too, and hearing 3 more on the radio city/merseyside phone in after the game all suggested about how people are having to re-consider with the prospect of ronnie still in charge, they also believe its time for a change, so stop taking out your issues on me an nathan because i know as well as you do that ronnie is very close to not being offered a new deal!
It just wont happen, their are better managers out their available

SWA, you say Moore hasn't fixed the problems we had last year, but he has.

Last season our problem was with our goalkeeper and lack of cover in defence.

He released Ward and signed Coyne which is a great improvement. He then signed Chorley, Kay and then later in the season, Andy Taylor. He has fixed last seasons problems, but this season has brought its own problems, some of which have also been fixed (E.g Moore in for Taylor)

I don't believe our strikers aren't good enough - they have had no service whatsoever and that is down to the injuries of Shuker and Davies - something which was out of Moore's hands.

When we've had injuried I also think Moore has brought in good players to replace them. Last year he brought in John Thompson, who was excellent, and I don't think JMW has done to bad, he's a young guy who is still learning.

He's improved the goalkeeping situation yes, but I personally don't rate Chorley - he's a cheap man's Ian Sharps. For his size he's surprisingly weak and his positional sense is awful, you watch highlights after the game and you think, "What's he doing there?". I think we still lack options at the centre of our defence.

I'm don't think our strikers are good enough to be honest. Moore has never been prolific, he scores a goal every 5 games roughly. However he makes space for the other striker which is why he's a good player. Zola will probably never get to 20 goals a season, Curran might but we won't know if he carries on picking up splinters on the bench. Whilst Greenacre - great as he was in his first 2 seasons, this season has awful. He's got no pace, he slow and ponderous, he doesn't take his chances - yesterday in last few minutes the ball fell to him after a corner and he basically cleared it! He's the highest paid player at the club and yet he wouldn't - I never thought I would say this after his first 2 seasons, even get in my 16. He's awful I would get rid of him and give Curran and co a chance and use the money used for his wages to get someone better. Greenacre this season has won the grand total of 4 points for the team- he only scores when were winning basically. Beckett at Huddersfield has scored 5 less and has won 10 points for his team - that tells it's own story.

There are lots of other problems that haven't been fixed despite the one you mentioned,

Totally agree with myles and SWA. As every bit is correct!

He cant change a game? won from behind twice! His tactics on the training ground to go into the match is Hoof, and the football is poor, and his away record and cup record is awful!

And with the better managers out there:
Martin Allen, Steve cotteril, Mike newell, Andy Ritchie ( imo) Joe royle, And there is probably more out, and i think everyone would come if Lorraine shows the right signs!

Dont say they will cost too much, as i cant see them going to be on much more than ronnie is!

Ronnie has tried his best, and over the last 3 seaons as manager its been top 10, and boring football, ask any oldham fan aswell!

And yet again Matty, saying improvement has been made, in a way yes, but i call improvement when you hasnt changed the team and you move up place like 03-04 and you cant even deny that. Ronnie was backed with money to sign some good players like he did, coyne, shuker, mclaren, stockdale, sheriff etcc...

Curran isn't the Player people think he is at the moment in my opinion and he certainly hasn't been performing for the Reserves (was alright in the last game though).

Gornell is a much better prospect for me and I would have liked to see him get in yesterday.

The strikers haven't had the service but I have to agree that all four of them have had a poor season for whatever reason.

Ronnie Moore's fault? Not really no! At the start of the season the pundits were saying we had the best combination of strikers in League One - it just didn't happen.

Martin Allen - He won't get on with Lorraine and will leave us after 5 months for a 'better' job.
Steve cotteril - Far to expensive - get real.
Mike newell - He's not going to come back after last time
Andy Ritchie - No better than Ronnie, look what he's done with Huddersfield, not much.

So any other suggestions?

Oh, and SWA, what was the last game you've attended, Chorley was our best player for about 5 games in a row recently.

i will be happy, good football, good entertainment is what i pay to watch, not cammell lairds style football, infact they probably play better football than us, and that is down to ronnie's style of play..HOOF

It will be better under the new Manager blah blah fu*king blah!

Football being a business (which I am aware of since I work in Business which you didn't know) has nothing to do with Ronnie's job.

Ronnie's job is to manage the players he has and this season he hasn't had everything available all the time.

Plus knowing you when Little was manager also has nothing to with it - another totally invalid point.

Just as a point - the Top 5 Longest Serving Managers in the Premiership are those at the Top 5 Positions (assuming you count Grant as having been there whilst Mourinho was there).

Yes last season with Litte, the football was negative and poor, so thats why a change was made, but atleast his first 2 years the football was good and we were getting good crowds, and we actually tried not to hoof it!

But ronnie took over to improve bad football and hasnt done that, 2 years its been bad football!

Atleast little had 2 years of decent football!

Not invalid Myles - the point is that consistency works and the Premiership proves that.

The other point being that they have money and we don't which is something else we as fans have to deal with but you don't seem able to.

Nathan - that wasn't my point about Little - read it again!

I was making the point that we went through the same thing two years ago and will go through the same thing again in two years time if fans of your mentality have their way.

You're entitled to your opinion but unlike SWA and Trevor Charles etc, your points and arguements have no substance.

god help you all if you were.
having said that would be pretty unfortunate.
what im trying to say is that i dont rate ronnie never have, never will but maybe i could put them across better, but i dont really see the point in spending 3 hours of my day writing a book on how poor ronnie is when i can say it an sentence, would take me a week to compile all ronnie's negatives, and 5 seconds to compile his positives

but when you have seen 2 years of football under Ronnie Moore, he has to go!

Nathan, this doesn;t make my point any better than yours but I have missed just two games this season so I know as much about the football as anyone.

At times it hasn't been great but other times we have played really well (Gillingham and Southend away being two examples) - can you put in perspective just a little?

is that good enough?

you might of been to more games, but i dont think the football will be alot better!

I just think its time for a change thats all. What positives are there for ronnie?

good football ?
good tactics??
good sub times?
cup record?
changing a game?
winning more than 3-0 goal margin ?

there isnt many. Please tell me if there is ! lol

Football as a business means that Ronnie is the right man. He is a semi-yes man who can see the picture from the club's (existance) point of view so he wont understand but he also has his own ambition which he wants to meet. He wont get us relegated (from what I have seen so far) and he has a fair chance of sniffing around promotion. I think for the time being the club is healthier staying where we are and takiing stock with Ronie incharge. He wont over spend and wont demand too much money, but he will still get in good players. I would rather settle into mid-table annonymity than get some manager in who will over spend in one season, fail and then as a result only be allowed to play youth players. We're safe with Ronnie. Low risk = low yeild. I think that's what we have.

I have been bored goin to the last few games, Im sick of just hoofing it up and expecting the stikers to do something. Zola also needs to start when hes fit, I don't like Moore at all, Zola offers pace and height, and Greenacre plays better alongside him.

To be honest, I have thought about it long and hard. He should go. I wouldn't sack him but he has failed to meet expectations in his 2 year tenure and there for he has passed his chance on to someone else who is more capable. He has been given a decent budget and has brought in good players but has failed to get them playing to a standard which pleases.
