Manager Moore Suspended by Club

By Deadly Submarine
February 17 2014

Tranmere Rovers have tonight announced that Manager Ronnie Moore has been suspended with immediate effect......

In the wake of reports in the media last week surrounding Rovers' Manager Ronnie Moore, the Club have today confirmed that Moore has been suspended from his job with immediate effect.

In a statement on the Official Website, Tranmere said...

"Tranmere Rovers have today announced that with immediate effect Manager Ronnie Moore has been suspended until the conclusion of a Football Association investigation into a potential breach of betting rules.  Assistant Manager John McMahon has been placed in temporary charge of first team affairs.  The Club will be making no further comment until the outcome of the investigation."

Tranmere of course travel to Crawley Town tomorrow evening in another important game in their bid to pull away from the League One relegation battle and will now do so without the stewardship of Moore, for this game and for the immediate future it would seem.

We will be OK with John Mac in charge...an experienced coach/assistant manager who gets on with the job...not flamboyant but down to earth and hard working and now has a chance to prove himself. He was well thought of at Liverpool where he was reserve team manager,so he knows his stuff.

Bloody hell.

Some people wanted him sacked, some didn't, but there's a word noone wanted to see - "suspended". Somehow tranmere always surpass my expectation of how bad things will get.

Why suspend him today and not on Friday when the investigation was first reported.
How long is this investigation going to take place? Bad timing when we are in the midst of a relegation dogfight.

This isn't a criticism but when people say "how much worse can it get" isn't this scenario what a lot of people wanted at the end of the day?

Clearly it's more bad publicity for the Club at an already difficult time so I can see it in that sense but Ronnie is currently not in charge of the first team so for many it's a win right?

I've been a long time backer of Moore staying in charge but for those that haven't been surely this is a step in the right direction in one sense at least?

Hi mate. As I was typing the story we had two other new threads about it started at the same time so once the story went up I wasn't sure what to do with three different threads.

In the end we figured that merging the three together would be best but as yours matched was in the story already it looked better to take it out.

Apologies I should have messaged you directly to explain when I did it.

Just happens that I'm at a loose end tonight and had the time haha!

Sub, if Ronnie had been sacked because of the extended run of poor football and our precarious position his dismissal would have been acceptable to " a lot of people." The circumstances, however, are far from that and the stench is getting stronger. Our situation is laughable to the tunnel rats and reinforces their unwarranted sense of superiority.

I hope this is resolved quickly, because with Ronnie suspended, we can't appoint a new manager. And at this moment in time, we need a manager. I'm guessing this must be an open and shut case though, just waiting on confirmation from the FA before sacking.

For those that wanted him out, it's the free way of doing it. I personally thought we would have been safe at the end of the season with Ronnie.

Just hope the players now pull together and get us away from trouble.

This is not what the club needs and right now, however Ronnie should be presumed innocent of all charges, just like other parties should have been in relation to past accusations and which Ronnie and the club clearly did.

As for the club suspending him, but not other parties in the past, the charges are different are they not and in the case of the other parties, no insinuation was made of potential misdemeanours specifically at Tranmere, only in relation to career-wide footballing endeavours in Britain and potentially past ones, not during their time at Tranmere and both have played for other clubs in this country.

As for Ronnie, the circumstances are different and other managers who have had implications against them in the past, have undergone the same suspension procedures at clubs, but it's not relevant, I feel, given the nature of these claims versus the last ones, to assert some kind of notion that inconsistency has occurred, by the club suspending a manager, but not those in the past alleged to have committed misdemeanours.

Hopefully this will sort itself out and the temporary managership will be in competent hands I feel, so the players and the staff need to focus on Tuesday's game and not allow speculation to affect them, not when the result the other day had plenty of good points to carry over.

Innocent until proven guilty but I would think the club have
checked on the allegations and realised there is a potential

I would hazard a guess and say that Ronnie has been suspended at the request of the Football League?

There are clear guidelines as to what is and isn't allowed when betting on football matches.

Ronnie knows the rules, he's been in management long enough.

There are obviously good reasons for the club doing this, and it would suggest that the powers that be have Ronnie banged to rights on this one?

There are probably loads of players and managers doing the same thing, however, Ronnie has been caught and is now reaping what he has sewn.

Moore was probably suspended because Tranmere have a lot of players on loan, and perhpas some managers are not too happy about their kids being under the influence of someone who is under investigation for breaking betting rules.

Sorry, but with respect he has not been caught doing anything. He has been accused of wrongdoing pending investigations.

Sorry, but with respect to you as well, the amount of loan players shouldn't have any bearing I feel and as for other managers believing their players could be being influenced, by a party with allegations to their name, why not just recall the players, either before he weekend game, or after it? Especially as I think Cassidy has a recall clause in his contract and possibly Pennington, Kennedy and Arthurworry might do too.

For one or more managers of loan players at Tranmere to subtly instigate behaviour, attempting to pressurise the FA or Tranmere into getting Ronnie suspended, on the basis they suddenly think their players are being influenced by a person, who has "supposedly" committed wrongdoing, they would have to be pretty much thinking that Ronnie is guilty and that's not prudent of any manager or chairperson, to automatically assume that one of their own is guilty of unproven accusations and then act on their preconceptions, because to put pressure on a third party with influence over Moore, to try and get him suspended, or to recall players, would put them and their clubs in a bad light, by making those clubs and managers out to be people who act based on clouded judgement.

If people like Roberto Martinez, Kenny Jacket and Rene Meulensteen and their chairpeople act responsibly during this time, they should not have attempted to pressure the FA or Tranmere into suspending Ronnie, nor withdrawn players from a loan spell without just reasoning and presuming Ronnie is guilty of the unproven allegations is not just reasoning.

So sorry to both people who I have quoted, but I must politely disagree.

For the Football League to investigate they must have sufficient evidence to bring the case forward?

For Tranmere to suspend their manager, they must have seen the evidence and acted accordingly?

So maybe I'm not wrong, just realistic?

I would imagine that the board would have asked to see the evidence against Ronnie before making such a bold move?

To suspend him ad hock would leave them in a difficult position if indeed he is found to be totally innocent of these charges?

Money being the way it is at Tranmere, I doubt that the board would risk a law suit by Ronnie's solicitors fro wrongful suspension or in worst case scenario (depending on whether you rate him) dismissal.

This course of action was probably taken via a recommendation by F.A Officials.

Ronnie said when goody and sodje were arrested that he had spoken to them and believed in their innocence, so he did not suspend them, so can we presume that the club has done the same with Ronnie and he has held his hands up and said guilty as charged.
Great respect for Ronnie but if he has broke the rules then he can no longer be in charge of the team, how will the players have any respect for him. Guess Ronnie will just drift into retirement, if so I would like to thank him for all his efforts as a player and as a manager, they can't take your achievements away from you.
Big chance for JM to make an impression, though he has a far better squad of players than Ronnie has had all season in terms of experience and fitness, big game tomorrow.

We have brought a temp manager in his name is John Mcmahon whether he saves us from the drop only time will tell.If you are referring to some one from outside the club they would cost money i would have thought it extremely unlikely.

Surely we must remember that the club is bigger than any manager or player. If Ronnie has broken the rules then he has to go!! Whether we agree or not! We need to get behind John Mc and the players and ensure we avoid the dreaded drop!

they have been looking to get shut of ronnie for months but couldnt because of the contract they gave him, he has basically loaded the gun for them by breaching league rules, he`s not liked at the club by anyone, players staff etc and his results over the last 12 months have warranted a sacking alone, as for mcmahon i cant help thinking he`s part of the problem, although i have it from a very good source that him and mcmahon dont like each other either, bye ronnie, you wont be back

The news of Ronnie being investigated came out last week.

The club waited until Monday before suspending him. I can only imagine that they have been contacted by the F.A over the weekend and they have asked for Ronnie to be suspended W.I.E?

If there was little or no evidence of any wrong doing, then the club would not have suspended him.

The last thing we need is something like this to disrupt what is already turning out to be a disastrous season.

Re: Manager Moore Suspended by Club

I think this is exactly the right move for the club to make. It's certainly not ideal though. If RM is guilty then it is gross misconduct and dismissal without compensation is the only outcome. In light of this then RM cannot remain in charge while under investigation by the league, but if the league do not find him guilty of anything then he can resume duties (if we sacked him for being investigated and he is cleared by the league then we would be guilty of wrongful dismissal).

What RM is accused of isn't a criminal offence as far as I am aware. It is just against the league rules and I'm not sure there is any suggestion of fraud (match fixing) having been committed which would make it a criminal offence. This makes it a different set of circumstances to Goody and Sodje. They are/have been investigated about a potential criminal activity, if and when charges are made they should be suspended pending the outcome of any trial.

I'm happy he is suspended, not sacked, and not in charge. Might seem odd to most, but I'm a believer in managers appointed for a season at the start being in charge for that season. I think the US have got that part of sport management spot on. Results have been poor, but if you analyse the stats (in excel, not looking at the league table) given squad size, and if you base abiltiy relative to published salary relative to past performance (last season), we should finish 2nd to bottom - so we are ahead on the moneyball system!

As such, does he deserve to be fired for performance? I'd say no, of course, relative to general football governance these days then yes, in fact on that basis, Brendon Rogers is in trouble, and Wenger is a dead man walking, but all that aside results wise, he should still be in a job.

The problem is discipline. How many red cards this year? How many missed chances / wrong decisions from players? Well coached players, well organised teams, confident & committed players do not beat Coventry 5-1 away, then get 2 red cards in the next few games and throw results away. Wallace vs Wolves? Wouldn't happen if coached properly.

My verdict. Ronnie is suspended - good news. Players now have a chance to show them what not playing for someone you don't want to play for looks like. 3 easy points on Saturday...?

Sorry I must politely disagree. Cassidy came back to play for Ronnie for a third time, if he didn't like him why come back a second time let alone a third.

As for Jennings he was not even contracted, so he could have walked anytime he liked, even within 30 minutes of starting his first training session and Ronnie couldn't have done squat, but he signed at Christmas.

Ridehalgh could have declined his transfer and Arthurworry, Kennedy and Pennington could have declined to return and any players who resigned in the past 18 months, could have said no thanks and left, including Fon Williams and loan players refusing to go back to Tranmere have the right and can't be punished by their respective clubs, so it's not like Arthurworry, Kennedy and Pennington came back to work for Ronnie, under duress and threat of being fined or sold by Fulham and Everton respectively, they did it of their own free will.

I know we have a small budget, but people backing things up with such:
2nd bottom of the league based on wages
or
he earns 2,000 week ? (not this thread)

&

making comments about the general feeling in a dressing room? which people get on well and who said what to whom?

sorry if I am just not aware of some database here, if so please let me know.

I'm not sure which player you're referring to, but there was a comment some time back, about Steve Jennings asking for £2,000 a week when he first came back to the club, which was alleged by someone wh I think is one of those with inside track, I can't remember who, but any other figures for players wages I've seen and I've ever posted tend to be assumptions.

This is a bad time for everyone connected with Tranmere Rovers, everyone is wondering what is going on behind the scenes.

There will always be hearsay and conjecture when there is a scandal of unknown proportion.

We've had to suffer over recent months with the club declaring a take over is imminent and then months of silence leaving people to make all sorts of scenarios up.

All this gossip is partially down to lack of reliable information being made available by the club.

The latest chapter in our dismal season is the controversy surrounding Ronnie and two players doing something they shouldn't.

It's very disruptive and can't be helping the players who are currently under achieving.

I think we should all wait and see how things pan out over Ronniegate and see what the club decides to do next?

I'm not a big fan of Ronnie Moore, I think he's taken us as far as he can.

I think its time to rebuild the whole club, from the board downwards.

It's looking like were weeks away from a melt down at the moment.

A club that is basically balancing it's own image mostly down to league one survival and a few community initiatives is one that has deep rooted issues, because it should have some other solid positives, but right now it doesn't.

Peter Johnson needs to step aside, because the board doesn't appear to come up with fresh thinking about revenue stream or appealing to locals, because they appear to make light of little to no monetising initiatives and whilst I appreciate a club isn't going to broadcast stuff to their rivals, but saying things like income X has risen by Z% because of (A) and income Y has risen by Z% because of (cool smiley, might help.

Surely occasional disclosures worded properly in the media or on the website, might hearten people if any happened.

One trust initiative they documented or spoke about in the past, involved ticketing initiatives that they thought could encourage around £200,000 of extra revenue.

This link to a company called Artemis seems to indicate some action in recent seasons, but it looks upon reading, like more of the same not anything new necessarily.

Artemis Article

This kind of thing is good, but if it only generates a few hundred quid a year more, it's not doing much, because the club has never even said corporate hospitality incomes have risen by X%.

links to the other side of the water could be established, by offering university students small ticket discounts for certain games with a student uni card, like say 10%-15% and maybe a program discount, but full priced drink and fayre.

A new board could come in and instigate some fresh ideas, but then again perhaps Mick Horton and Lorraine Rogers could be much more progressive thinkers business wise, but Peter Johnson may be someone that doesn't let them have more leeway and may be someone that uses tried and trusted business principles that worked in the 70's and 80's, that still work, but doesn't look at new ways like how some Japanese companies finance, or how the Americans finance a business.

Tranmere cannot continue to function with limited manager salaries so you cant get certain people you want and then offer the ones you want the type of spending that puts some of them off.

The financial gap has grown since Tranmere went down irrespective of attendance drops, because teams like Coventry, Preston, Sheffield United and Wolves were not there and competition requires better investment, so if you want an experienced higher level performer like Sean O'Driscoll for example, you can offer people like him £2,500,000+ to spend making it worth their while, with appropriate salaries to afford them, because paying the sort of money that means you loan in kids all the time and have to pay a manager a fraction more than someone like James Beattie might be getting at Accrington, isn't worth it to many.

Change must come or clubs like Tranmere will tread water at best with the occasional bust of optimism like half a season of over-achievement, followed by a reality check.

Then I ate his Liver.......... with some baked beans and a can of coke.
