Tranmere Youngsters Make it Three in a Row!

Tranmere’s under-18 side continued their fantastic winning habit to start the 2015/16 season with a 4-0 thumping of Morecambe’s youth side on Saturday morning at Rovers’ Raby Vale training ground thanks to goals from Scott Medlen, Tolani Omotola (2) and Udoyen Akpan.

In all truth the score could have been twice as many more than four as Rovers dominated virtually the entire match in what was a torrential downpour for much of the first 45 minutes. Tranmere had an early chance when Jake Hulley met Jay Hunter’s corner but his header was cleared from the line just when it looked set to go in.

Shortly afterwards, Rovers were awarded a penalty which Hunter stepped up to take but despite being in the corner, it seemed to lack power and the goalkeeper made the save before the ball was frantically cleared away.

Tranmere continued to dominate possession in the first half but couldn’t make the all important breakthrough with the Morecambe keeper on top form throughout!

After the break though, with the rain gone and the sun threatening to make an appearance, Tranmere finally made the breakthrough when good work by Omotola set up Scott Medlen whose excellent lobbed finish into the goal ensured his second goal in as many games.

Having finally broken the deadlock, it wasn’t long before the lead was doubled when Omotola collected the ball outside the Morecambe penalty area, dummied past a defender and scored past the helpless goalkeeper.

Udoyen Akpan replaced winger Tom Croughan shortly after the second goal and it was Akpan that added the third goal not long after. With the ball at his feet on the edge of the visitors penalty area, it appeared that Akpan was running out of room but with an easy pass to Jay Galloway out wide it seemed all was not lost with that particular attack. However Akpan opted not to pass and instead hit an incisive finish into the net to make it 3-0 to Rovers.

As the end of the game approached, Rovers’ youngsters were even given a chance to make amends for the missed penalty in the first half when Omotola ran clear but was felled in the area by the Morecambe goalkeeper resulting in a clear-cut penalty. The goalkeeper received only a yellow card much to the relief of even the Rovers fans in attendance who all agreed that he had by far been the visitors Man of the Match and a red card would have been an incredibly harsh way for his game to end.

Omotola dispatched the penalty with a cool finish to make it 4-0 and there was still time for two more Rovers substitutions as Jamie Heron and Kevin Cringle replaced Jay Hunter and Callum Lucy.

The win was a convincing one for a youth side looking every bit the finished article so early in the season. Three straight wins to begin the season is a great start and although there is a long way to go this season, the future does look bright for the youth system at Tranmere Rovers.
