Match Thread: Sheffield Wednesday vs Wolves (Carabao Cup)

Wolves travel to Sheffield to take on Wednesday tonight in the second round of the Carabao Cup

Nuno will probably make wholesale changes to the team tonight and treat tonight's match as a 'squad game'. This will give members of the squad a chance to stake their claim to a place in the Manager's final 25 First Team Squad for the Premiership challenge.

It will be interesting to see if players like Danny Batth and Joe Mason get brought in from the cold for a game tonight.

Break by Traore leads to Wolves first corner.

So... no sign of Danny Baath even on the bench tonight. Jordan Graham has gone to Ipswich on a season'sloan

I think this will be one of those matches where it will show that players haven't played together before. Gibbs-White is in the front line with Leo & Traore which is a totally new line-up for us. Leander Dendoncker and Elliot Watt make their debut at the back with the experience of Coady, Vinagre, Saiss and Doherty to support them, so it will be interesting to see how they all do.

Wolves starting to put some pressure on Wednesday after a fairly dull start.

Wednesday include old Wolves players David Jones and Steven Fletcher in their line-up

Bonatini threads a super ball through to Gibbs-White to give him a great chance to get his first Wolves goal, but it's on his wrong foot and he scuffs it!!

Not many goals anywhere tonight so far Chesh

Traore having no real impact against experienced defender Morgan Fox so far. Another good attack through Bonatini leads to a corner for Wolves

Half Time after no added time.

Nothing much to report - best opportunity for Wolves fell to Morgan Gibbs-White but otherwise we have been quite toothless. Traore has shown promise but lacked ideas at times. Dendoncker has done OK at the back.

who is Elliot Watt?

I've only come across his name this evening Chicago! I imagine he is from the Under 23's just the same as Ben Ashley-Seal ( I wish they wouldn't all adopt double-barrelled names!!!) on the bench who has scored 4 goals of them this season, including 2 against the Albion.

Good effort by Gibb-White after good work from Traore.

Goal by Leo Bonatini after another pacy powerful run by Traore. 226 days Leo has waited for this moment!!

Traore has been singled out for some bad tackles tonight and the second Weds player gets a yellow card for fouling him.

Another debut from an Under 23 player - Pedro Goncalves signed from Valencia last summer replaces Elliot Watt who has played well.

Ruddy clears the ball off the line in the first real attack by Weds.

A dubious foul is given against Traore by the linesman, and free kick is taken well by Ruddy

Gibbs-Whits has had a good game - he now just needs to start getting some decent shots at goal and some goals. He is replaced by Helder Costa.

Quite a lengthy delay to the match after Hutchinson and Boyd collided and had suspected head injuries.

Cardiff losing 3 - 0 to Norwich!

Ben Ashley-Seal replaces Leo Bonatini who will undoubtedly feel better for scoring his first goal this year!!

And Villa losing; give them a chance to focus on promotion.

Four mintues added time to be played.

Ashley-Seal showed no fear taking on several players in a daring run

Hope so! Great to see us win a fixture like this ... potentially lol

Elsewhere, ahead of the weekend, West Ham sneak in front v Wimbledon with 5 to go, potentially their first win too

Costa and Vinagre link up with a great run ended by a desperate tackle.

Corner to Wednesday

That's it folks Wolves win their first game of the season with a comprehensive 2 - 0 win at Sheffield Wednesday, with goals from Leo Bonatini and Costa from the penalty area.

Good all round performance - our defence seemed to be well in control throughout. Traore showed promise but seemingly not enough to yet warrant a start on Saturday. Gibbs-White had a good game until substituted, and Ruben Vinagre had a good 90 minutes.

Onwards in search of our PL first win on Saturday

Re- Cheshires post above

I thought Wolves were garbage 1st half. Sheff made 11 changes from last saturday. We gave the ball away far too often and didn't have a single shot on target. It took until Bonatini scored before we woke up. Needed a penalty to seal it.

Can't say much about Dendonker,he hardly touched the ball. Sheff very 1 sided. Ruddy did well, was certainly being kept alert.

I'll take the win, probably deserved for the improvement in the 2nd half. I expected Sheff to field a stronger side tonight, glad they didn't.

A potential banana skin avoided. Sounds like a fairly good performance from what was, by and large, a second eleven. Good to get the first win and let's hope the second comes on Saturday.

Hi Ian
Please feel very free to 'taking up the commentary mike' again. it was never my intention to them all - and in fact I won't be in a position to do them for the last three matches of September. I am very happy to set the pages up and then join in the comments.
Typically last pm my focus was on preparing for the match and once again forgot to do my Prediction League forecast!!
