Champions League

Don’t want to give our fortune the kiss of death but it is time to think about the next level up.
Clearly avoiding relegation might be a good start. We have been running on fumes recently (Man City gloriously excepted) with ugly draws, late last gasp goals and quieter crowds. The story is that Nuno prefers a smaller squad (probably I guess about as much as any of us prefer a smaller bank balance) and last nights Boy Scout’s show indicates nothing. See what we have for you next time , Villa!! But to get to the top four, and stay there, requires the kind of investment that Jeff Shi claims to be avoiding (sixty, eighty million per player). Mendez has helped find some gems, loans and bargains, but that lustre has certainly been tested this season with our less-than-marquee signings requiring ‘patience’. Oh god. We also have to hang on to our best players; just as Boly got injured the talk was of him moving to a BIG club. If one thing irritates me it is the assumption that Wolves are not a top club ( not being grandiose, but one element of being top is feeling and acting top). Chelsea and Man City went, quickly, from mediocre middle of the pack nonentities to the pinnacle. Mostly money (you listening Jeff?) but also arrogance and a kind of superiority. Yes it is ludicrous but for our top players to stick around and for the best to come here, we have to move forward and do it now. Success is temporary, fragile. We have had a taste of progress, huge by our recent standards but we are not yet competing regularly. If we go out of the Europa early and finish middle of the table that would historically be fabulously successful, but for where we are claiming to aspire it would be a catastrophe.
We need to spend, but we especially need to stop looking over our shoulders.

Not a chance in hell of the CL without a new owner/owners, you clearly haven't been keeping up with news in the past few days Chicago. January will be a very frugal month unless we sell first I'm afraid so anyone expecting investment in the squad is going to be very disappointed.

Well Chicago that worthless rag has done a 180 in the last few days .. who knows what to believe. As I posted on the other thread, this article looks far more encouraging and certainly feel better contrary to reading that Fosun are looking to sell up for all intensive purposes. I still maintain they lost a huge amount of money with Thomas cook but maybe was premature in the impending doom based on their lack of investment- time will tell.

Time will indeed. And we have just cause for skepticism. I don’t ever recall us having a good January (funnily enough in Austin here the other day one of the Wolves supporters was wearing an O’Hara shirt for the viewing of the Newcastle game; had to laugh) but the again, who does? It is a tough window to do anything useful.
