The Grand National. The Melling Road is for hillbillies. The Tattersalls and West Tip is for local chavs. To enjoy the racing, you need to be Princess Royal or better. The festival has little to do with the racing for the majority of "racegoers"

Best watched from home imho

My least favourite racecourse in the UK.

Racing on the tv is superb until they start banging on about the frocks and suits.... they actually employ 2 people to do it! Deffo put the kettle on time

I could probably rave endlessly about some of the lesser-known racecourses. But I will spare the reader.

Been to many racecourses.do a different one every year with our local racing club. But I do like staying in ulverston and going to cartmel races even though it's not a good course for viewing.

Horse racing is not sport so doesn't belong in this thread.

Athletics bores me to tears. Running fast, jumping high : it's useful in other sports. But as an event on its own? Nah. May we well give our medals for being the tallest or have a biggest lungs category.

The last time I was at Cartmel was in May 2014. If I recall correctly, I only went because it was a reciprocal meeting. I can't remember any notable winners that day (Sm6)

Love a day out at Chester. Train from Hamilton Square to Chester. Nice walk along the canal and the wall. Bit of a picnic and a few beers on the open course. Win a few quid on Khoukash's Gabriel's. Meal at Chez Jules on the way back to the station. Heaven

I've always done well at Chester. I considered myself a course specialist for a few years. I was always on the lookout for overpriced left-handers. If Mark Johnston had a runner(s) priced 5/2 or more early in the morning, I'd usually pencil that into the equation. Apart from Chester and a few other flat courses, I rarely took an interest in flat racing. I spent little time racing during the summer months. It was just a hobby/interest until the jumps season.

The most over rated sports events - formula one grand prix - since schumacher has gone it is absolutely gone down the tubes, the cricket ashes, darts, horse racing, swimming, and any sporting event that has gary lineker on it.

A couple of years ago I went to a meeting at Bangor on Dee, a friendly little course where you can get near the horses as they come out onto the course. I called out to a jockey who was on Roxyfet, the horse I had backed, "Good luck mate my money's on you. "He shouted back " no effin chance. " sadly he was right.

I dont mind going the races as such but cant be arsed with all the stuff that goes with it - ie getting a suit on, ‘having’ to get smashed, sobering up enough to want to go home on the way to the compulsary meal afterwards. Too long a day for me

I was once walking up to Haydock races when a horse van went past with a horse standing on the roof. I banged on the window and asked the driver " do you know there's a horse standing on the roof?". He replied, "oh yes, it's ok, he's the outsider".

Darts, it's a recreational game, not a sport, a complete waste of TV time. I shall now hide behind the sofa, and await the incoming barrage.

I think any sport needs to be seen live to be fully appreciated

one of my all time fave bits of TV sports commentary came in the Athletics back in the 1970s... it was a race involving British runner Donna Hartley..she was leading in this particular race and could sense an East German athlete catching up with her on the inside, so she increased her stride and upped the pace...the commentator ( i think it was Ron Pickering ) commented like this - "Donna Hartley opens up her legs as she feels the East German coming inside her."

last time i was interested in the athletics/olympics was in the Coe/Ovett era...
