Two games to go in the Third Division promotion race and Sons still hold on to the all important second place.  It's going to come down to the wire and CSN takes another look at Sons and our rivals final run-in.  Remarkably all four teams won last week to keep the race going in the closest run-in for years.

Dumbarton

Dumbarton currently sit in second place and maintained their two point lead over Albion Rovers with a vital win at Champions Brechin City.  Sons dominated the match but could only manage the one goal, from Andy Brown.

Date  Opponent Venue Current Position
20-04-2002  Peterhead The Rock 4th
27-04-2002  Queen's Park The Rock 10th

Sons come face-to-face with Peterhead on Saturday and a win here would leave them in the driving seat in their final match against Queens Park.  This is a promotion six-pointer but even if Sons do take care of the Highlanders they may still need a victory over Queens Park at The Rock.

Albion Rovers

Rovers have continued on their impressive run and its now EIGHT games since their last defeat.  The Coatbridge side are the form team but must keep winning and only achieved this last week courtesy of a late penalty against East Fife.

Date  Opponent Venue Current Position
20-04-2002  Stirling A. Forthbank 8th
27-04-2002  Elgin City Cliftonhill 6th

Albion Rovers face a Stirling Albion side smarting from a second half drubbing at the hands of Peterhead so hopefully they will want to make amends for this.  Unfortunately its hard to tell how both Stirling and Elgin will play as both have essentially nothing to play for - if Dumbarton draw with Peterhead then it will come down to goal difference on the last day of the season.

Peterhead

Peterhead came back from a goal down to blitz Stirling with a 5 goal barrage to keep them in the hunt.  Again their defeat to East Stirlingshire could be their most costly result of the season.

Date  Opponent Venue Current Position
20-04-2002  Dumbarton The Rock 2nd
27-04-2002  Montrose Balmoor 5th

Coming to The Rock on the penultimate day of the season is a must win match for the Blue Toon anything less will see them slip out of the promotion race.  Even a victory would leave them trailing Sons and Rovers going into the final day where they face fellow outsiders Montrose.

Montrose

Montrose looked a good bet throughout the season to take the second promotion slot but now require both Dumbarton and Albion Rovers to slip up while defeating Peterhead on the last day. They kept in touch with their win last weekend however with the other sides continuing to win Montrose fans may be starting to lose faith.

Date  Opponent Venue Current Position
20-04-2002  East Stirling Links Park 7th
27-04-2002  Peterhead Balmoor 4th

Its now the turn of Montrose to face the new super team East Stirling before travelling to Peterhead on the last day.  If they are still in touch for that they could still snatch it although they require others to slip up.

Odds

Sons can still win it on Saturday against Peterhead (as long as Albion Rovers don't win and we do that's it).  However this promotion race looks like it will go to the final day and the win at Glebe Park was a big result especially with results elsewhere.  I don't think anyone expected all the teams to start winning but it no looks like we may have to win the final two matches to make the step up.
