Match Thread: Southampton FC vs Wolves

Joao gets stuck in
By Wolves
January 18 2020

Wolves face a challenging afternoon when they travel to Southampton for today's Premier League game. Southampton have been revitalised in recent weeks after a struggle at the beginning of the season, and now sit three points behind Wolves and seven points above the relegation zone.

Southampton appear to be benefitting from sticking with their manager Ralph Hasenhuttl during their struggles in the bottom three earlier in the season. Danny ings has been scoring for fun up front and indeed scored their goal at Molineux in October. Wolves meanwhile have had to deal with the disappointment of losing another close game by a single goal, having had a goal chalked off through VAR, and Pedro Neto still waits to score his first PL goal!!

Young left back Ryan Giles has been recalled from his loan at Shrewsbury Town following a last minute hamstring injury sustained by Ruben Vinagre at Man Utd . Willy Boly is still on the road to recovery, whilst there was no mention in yesterday's press conference about the progress or availability of Diogo Jota, who we have clearly missed in recent weeks.

Our referee today will be another newbie this season in Darren England. Let's hope he performs better than Peter Bankes last week!!

This board will hopefully carry regular updates during the match. Members are encouraged to post their own observations of the game for the benefit of those unable to follow it.

Rui Patricio returns replacing John Ruddy today, but otherwise an unchanged staring line-up from Wednesday's game. Very little experience on the bench either:

Afternoon Andy I wondered that too! I can only get a stream with probably Korean commentary which is about a minute behind play. Using the OS commentary too.

Jonny & Adama link up well, but Adama shoots rather than set up Neves. Goes for a corner which is cleared

Adama gives away a free kick in award-Prowse territory which goes right across to Bednarek and he loops it past Rui into top right corner. Another poor start.

Raul really unlucky not to score as McCarthy fluffs a Neto cross. t the other end the dangerous Redmond creates a hewpading chance collected by Rui

Adama is taken out as he passes the ball. Free kick on the right wing for Joao to pass into Raul but he blasts it wid, but also hurts his ankle in a challenge from Ings. Seems to be OK

Armstrong shot well collected by Rui. Wolves playing OK but this is going to be a hard game to win

Adama to Neto and a glorious ball in for Raul and he touches it wide - he was definitely inside too!!

My stream has frozen.
Two good opportunistic goals for Saints although the defending should have been better.
Our lads are looking a bit jaded/tired and have lost some of their sharpness but are still competing.
Make a comeback from two goals down, I doubt it so it may become a game of damage limitation.

Half time whistle goes after one added minute. Southampton playing like a team in form with crisp passing and well organised defending, whereas Wolves are struggling, possible tired. Raul has had a couple of chances but put them both wide.
Perhaps Nuno will look towards the pace and energy of youth to try and create for us in second half

Well we have kicked off again with no changes to note. Southampton bring a save out of Rui before Long is called offside. Wolves still struggling to get things going for themselves

Redmond forward again and his cross finds Long's head but goes off the outside of the post

Seemingly it's Neto's second goal as he scored at Watford - my mistake!!
Saints 2 Wolves 1
Neves sets up Jonny in the box and he is taken out by Stephens. No penalty given and it should be if VAR get it right...........
Penalties rightly awarded on VAR review, although ref should have gone to view it for himself

Raul is down hurt, not sure why. Seems to be some concern about him. Ten minutes to play so perhaps a sub at this stage would make sense. Just seen that he took a whack from the Doc as he went up for a ball!!

Thanks Andy, it was disappointing for Hesgoals not to work as well as usual but always a risk I suppose. In the end I found a link through F'book with a perfect picture and English commentary, so all ended well. Just delighted for Ivybridge Wolf who was there to watch it today

Great 2nd half performance from the boys didn't really see it coming at ht if I'm honest, nuno must have been throwing the teacups around at ht. The guys a genius, he tweaked a few things and it paid off! Oh and did I dream it or did we actually have a few var decisions go our way for once ha ha. Well done wolves on a great win made my weekend.

What a match, what a comeback! Pleasure to be there to witness, though to be absolutely honest, I am referring to the second half, of course!
What happened in the first 45? I don’t think any of us could fathom it. A decent start up until the goal but it wasn’t as if we went to pieces, we just never got going in any cohesive manner. Poor ball control and retention, poor running off the ball, lacklustre all over the pitch. It couldn’t have been tiredness, the second half proved that, to me it was a further extension of the general poor form since the Liverpool match. Absolutely no fight and terrible body language throughout. Neves, Moutinho, Traore, Jimenez, Donk all guilty of some p!ss poor passing. And the goals, yep amateur defending. Mind you the first was after a lovely cross from Ward-Prowse and a decent finish from the lad, irrespective of Docs positioning. And then pint size Albion reject, Long beat Donk to another very good cross. And the miss from Jimenez was typical as it was poor.
Dejected at half time and you look at the bench and think oh f**k! Hideous half. There was much gnashing of teeth in St Mary’s Northam End, I can tell you.

But as I sat, contemplating the grim journey home, Nuno was at work in the changing room. Since he’s been our manager, those 15 minutes represent the biggest moment I would have wanted to be a fly on the wall. What did he say, how did he say it, how did the players react?? A speech worthy, perhaps, of folklore status??

From the off, the tempo was different, the endeavour was greater, the body language more positive. We were in their face! I’m not going to say we transformed into the silkiest display I’ve ever seen, that would be ridiculous (we didn’t) but we changed and it was enthralling to witness. Uplifting, exciting, wonderful and winning!

I hope you’ve all had chance to see the goals by now, Neto’s a lovely turn and bang, back of the net. Was a comeback possible? What energy this lad demonstrated yesterday to get his 4th goal of the season (I’m counting the nauseating VAR reversals at Anfield and Old Trafford). As for the second, the only two people In St Mary’s who didn’t think it was a penalty was the ref (what was he thinking) and Hasselhuteldootlepootle. So VAR favoured us at last? So be it. And finally the third, lovely run from Traore, but I thought it over ran it but instead he turned played a pass perfect and a beautiful deft shot from Jimenez and wild celebrations! That shot was sumptuous, Raul’s touch a delight as he guided it towards me with only the net to stop it.

We witnessed a reasonable resurgence of Saints after that, Redmond clipping the bar from distance but that turned out to be the major sweaty palms moment before the final whistle. This was because, in no small part, our defiance and guile lasted till the final seconds of the match.

Well done Wolves, a superb thriller, an excellent spectacle, a magnificent 3 points.

As for VAR yesterday, my observations are this. All of our goals involved VAR. The first took bloody ages to sort out, nobody could understand why they were reviewing a handball. We celebrated, we stopped, the review, the choruses of ‘F**k VAR’, the decision, the muted re-celebrations. Then the penalty itself. Yes it helped us but in the interest of parity it still received the same chant from big numbers of Wolves fans. Again it took an age to rectify. The third goal, I went mad for a split second then stopped, you just knew a review would dampen celebrations and so it proved, but when ‘possible handball’ came up, we were thoroughly confused. An age to decide, yet again, with the appropriate Wolves chorus yet again, followed by more muted celebrations after a decision made miles away from the action.
It’s been said before but we now in an era when you can no longer celebrate the moment which is most precious in football ....... a goal. This has been taken away from us to appease the arm chair pundits and tabloids. What a state we now find ourselves in. My moment, and that of many, many more, a rare and special moment of reversing a 2 goal deficit was dampen and dulled. Sad.

But we won and uplifting, so my grim journey home wasn’t as bad after all. It was also an important lesson, never ever give up in this team we’ve got!!!

Who’s up for beating Liverpool next? Count me in!

UTW!
