A case of Kane v Raul?
By Ivybridge Wolf
February 13 2022

After two 1-0 home defeats in a week against Norwich and Arsenal, Wolves travel to Spurs today in the hope of reversing most recent fortunes. Bruno Lage won the January Manager of The Month with four wins out of four (one FA cup, three league), but the curse of that award appears to have since taken grip with the Wolves attack rarely seriously troubling the opposition goal in 180 minutes of football.

Goals for Wolves have been the problem all season, now standing at just 19 in 22 premier league fixtures, with the January ‘goal glut’ of 9 goals seemingly drying up. The defence made mistakes for both the Norwich and Arsenal winners, nevertheless, collectively, they have been exceptionally good all season and the odd off moment at the back should really be supported at the other end by our attacking players, particularly when at Molineux. How much will we miss Traore, will Podence, Trincao and Hwang be able to provide the creativity (and on a consistent basis), is Rauls dip in form due to a drop in confidence, poor supply, or both, who is our marauding midfielder, can Fabio fill the number 9’s boots, how quickly can Neto be returned to the starting line up? Lots of questions concerning Wolves scoring more goals! Irrespective of the answers, we have proved that we can be a match to any side in this league, which is perhaps why the last week has been so frustrating.

Enough of that! Today we take on Spurs, close to 50 years since these two sides played out the UEFA cup final! We won our first ever visit to the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (do they still call it White Hart Lane?) 2 years ago by 3-2, a match that was utterly gripping with goals from Doherty, Jota and Jimenez. Sadly, we haven’t beaten Spurs since, but we did at least play well at Molineux earlier in the season, losing to a dodgy penalty in one of the famed first three matches of the season …. Outplaying the opposition, an inability to score and losing all three 1-0.

Today’s match must be viewed as an opportunity for Bruno and the players, an opportunity to apply further pressure on Spurs who are themselves up and down in form. Our opposition have lost their last two league matches versus Chelsea and midweek at home to Southampton, a result which should hearten all associated with Wolves. Indeed, a Wolves win would provide a mini record of the first run of 4 away topflight wins in a row since 1980!! Now, wouldn’t that be welcome?! Having said that, despite recent defensive frailties, any side with Kane and Son have the capability of hurting us ….. we know that.

How will Bruno shape up? Whilst Toti was unlucky to be dropped midweek, there is no need to change the three central defenders in my view, however I’d bring in Ait Nouri for Marcal. In midfield, will Moutinho have recovered from the calf strain that kept him out versus Arsenal? I hope so. Will Hwang be fit to push either Podence or, more likely Trincao for a place? I am clear that we should keep with Raul ahead of Fabio, nevertheless, there is a greater onus of the likes of Podence and Trincao for much better quality of supply (some of the crosses last Thursday were very poor) and to try to vary the of style of attack. For me it has to be quicker, more assured and put the last line of defenders under greater pressure …… take them on down the channels too!! The young lad Chiquinho seems like a raw and promising talent, albeit in a couple of cameos, so I expect we will see him again, likely from the bench.

It’s a big match for Wolves. A chance to extinguish a flat and frustrating week, what better way to do it than with a fighting and positive performance at Spurs.

The match kicks off at 2pm though is not covered by broadcasters. However you are able to follow, enjoy the match, please feel free to contribute to the thread, and UTW!!

Considering our current form I think that this will be a difficult game almost regardless of which team is selected. We seem to be unable to fashion any clear cut chances which may be due to the slow buildup getting into the opposition half, too many sideways and backwards passes always allows for their players to set themselves up to defend any attack when it eventually arrives and we rarely have enough players in the box to cause them real problems. The interplay between players is fabulous to watch but is meaningless unless we gain the upper hand in the final third. If Hwang is fit he should play, brings more energy to the team and his goal tally is superior to Trincao. RAN should start because of the greater threat he brings over Marcal.
Hopefully Bruno will have addressed the striking problems and we will give a good account of ourselves, can but hope and all fingers crossed.

I would also like to see Hwang and Ait-Nouri start and definitely Moutinho if fit, which would also give Bruno the option of playing 3-5-2.

Looks likke he is playing 3-5-2 Andy, but still no Joao available . Two changes to the starting Xl with Ait-Nouri returning and Luke Cundle getting his first start - a brave move by Bruno' Line-up:

Again a very difficult match to forecast the outcome of. Spurs have the manpower to trounce us in fairness, especially with a front 3 of Son, Kane and Moura, but then we have proved just how well we can defend this season, and have been unlucky to succumb to one goal defeats on several occasions.

We also know we have the ability to spring unexpected wins on teams like Spurs, however the last time we did so there was a certain Diogo Jota scoring and providing two assists, and we do miss him!
A draw would be a good result in my view this afternoon but I can't help hoping for so much more to make sure we stay in the hunt for the European places, and keep the chasing pack at bay.

Well, in a small squad, Bruno is not afraid of making decisions and what a bold one to start Cundle.

Good luck to the lad and all of the players today, something needed to happen to bolster up the prospects of scoring a goal, why not this? Great opportunity for Cundle

Just watching the highlights vs Arsenal.
We did have a few chances. It probably wasn’t as dire as it felt seeing it live on Thursday. Maybe this is the time for a nice win. We wuz robbed against Spurs earlier and Luke Cundle will be anxious to show what he can do on the big stage.

To be honest, danger remains with Son and Kane, Sa just having to make a great intervention with his foot. We just need to get and keep a bit of possession.

We get possession and Lloris having to make a great save from Podence . Could easily be 0-3

Kane gets on the end of a header but straight to Jose which is the last action of a superb first half for Wolves. Two chances taken really well after being presented through poor defending by Spurs. Donk has had a better than usual game in midfield and making up the front line. Strong fluid passing through the midfield by Wolves and well organised defending. Luke Cundle doing very well too.

Deserved lead, with a significant helping hand from chaotic Spurs defending. Some great stuff from us, and some very good defending too when needed.

Great for Raul, equally great for the Donk. I think we have given the ball away a little but that failing has been trumped in the first 45 from Spurs, very very surprising. I still think we’ll have to be on our metal for this half. As I said, some very good Wolves defending but total concentration will be required now. Kane and Son are looking dangerous to me.

If you are watching a stream, how SPurs biased is it?? Bloody awful.

Here we go, second 45, Spurs 0-2 Wolves.

C’mon me babbies

Free kick in the left back position which RAN gives away after more SPurs pressure.

In it comes, Son takes, comes out, Winks smashes it, deflected on the post, corner, comes out, another Spurs free kick, yellow to RAN, this is only 19 yards out.

Big moments and pressure. 65 gone

Free kick given, Spurs take it quickly but move is overruled by ref. RAN get a yellow card. Free kick one yd outside our box to Spurs. Comically Jose puts it out for a corner. All frantic stuff.

Luke Cundle has had a good game and is replaced by Trink. Neves concedes a corner. Cleared then comes back in but Jose is there. Five minutes plus AT to play

Brilliant save from Sa!!! It was a corner and a firm header tipped over.

Max inadvertently blocks a Kane header. Trink fouled which slows up play & suits us. How many on here forecast a 2-0 win to Wolves??

Great play from Fabio and Trinc to keep the ball in the advance right wing position and wind down the clock.

We are keeping the ball much more comfortably now. 5 minutes added.

Spurs fans leaving, 4 of the 5 remaining

FT 2-0 Wolves. And despite some nervy second half moments it was well deserved. Especially great to see Raul bang one in.
Up to 7th in Prem

All over and a fantastic win for Wolves after a dispiriting result on Thursday. Two really enterprising goals in first half and a solid defensive display thereafter. R sally brave of Bruno to start Luke Cundle who did well, and to give Hwang ten minutes in his recovery. Spurs went close a few times but we rode the challenge well and thoroughly deserved the points which put us up to 7th place - a point above Spurs and a +4 goal difference!!
Spurs 0 Wolves 2

Great response after this last week.
Two good goals. Yes, we were helped by some comic defending but Raul's was a great strike and, although Dendoncker's was a tap-in if you don't follow up you don't score.
Everyone did their job although Podence gave the ball away/lost possession too much for my liking.
Sa is a fantastic goalkeeper but he does make your heart flutter now and again.
Cundle did well, nothing eye catching but certainly didn't look out of place.
Coady was solid as usual and seems to organize brilliantly but Kilman just gets better and better, handled Son very well. Would anyone have Maguire over Max? Certainly not me.
This has put us back in a great position. Please don't let it slip again lads.

Great team effort which brought us the just rewards. Kilman once again proving what a terrific defender he is, barely gave Son any space, my man of the match. Cundle did very well and that will give him so much confidence for future matches. Good substitutions and Trincao did well and maybe it’s just me but Fabio seems to be gaining in confidence and beginning to show us some of his skills. The future looks rosy despite my doom laden forecast earlier today.

One other thing. If we had taken a draw against Arsenal and again against Spurs, I would have been fairly satisfied so to come out of those two matches with three points is a nice little bonus, where I'm concerned anyway.

Fantastic team performance, don't think anyone had a bad game but I thought kilman was outstanding today and young luke cundle certainly didn't let anybody down, thought he was calm on the ball and his passing was great. We are back in the shake up. Well done lads I love a win against spurs, i still ain't forgiven them for breaking my heart in the 81 semi when i was a young lad!

I'm long in the fang enough to remember the heartbreak of the 1972 UEFA Cup Final against Spurs.

Likewise when we drubbed Arsenal 5-1 in the snow when it was shown as the main match on MOTD.

So games against both these teams stir up special memories for me.
