Match Thread: Wolves vs Brentford FC

Man Of The Moment
By Wolves
February 10 2024

After Wolves thrilling and comprehensive win last Sunday, completing the 'double' over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, they return to Molineux today to once again face Brentford. This will be the fourth match between the two teams in just over six weeks, and Wolves will again be looking to complete the 'double' over the London team after the 4-1 win in late December at the GTech Community Stadium.

Head coach Gary O'Neil is certainly not getting carried away by the results his team have achieved in recent weeks in both the League and the FA Cup, and he clearly sees today's game as a possible banana skin for his team, particularly noting the return to his team of Ivan Toney, who will surely be hoping to atone for his team's two losses and draw in recent games.

To counterbalance this somewhat O'Neil is clearly pleased to have Hwang Hee Chan back in the squad after South Korea's exit from the Asia Cup, and Boubakar Traore similarly back from the AFCON Cup. The presumption at the moment is that Hwang will at least make it on to the bench for today's game, rather than disrupt the front three who did so well in last week's game. It will however certainly be interesting to see who comes out as top scorer this season between Hee Chan and Matheus Cunha who has certainly found his scoring boots, to the delight of all Wolves fans after an initial struggle to find the net. Similarly Rayan Ait-Nouri played very well on his return to the starting eleven last week and would appear to have staked an ownership to his left wing-back role, with Matt Doherty and Hugo Bueno providing support when needed. Toti Gomez's performances in defence have also been recognised and rewarded by the club this week as he has signed a 5.5 year deal to remain until 2029.

Today's game is due to kick off at 3pm and will not be screened live. Highlights will be available on MotD tonight. Our referee may get a hostile reception from the crowd if they realise that Simon Hooper was the man who failed to award Wolves a penalty in the opening game of the season at Old Trafford!! He will be assisted on VAR duty by Peter Bankes.

This board will endeavour to provide regular updates on the progress of the match for those who want them, and visitors and board members are encouraged to post their own observations and join in the conversation.

Brentford again arghh.
If we play our A game we should be able to put another three points in the bag but no doubt about it, Brentford will not roll over easily so a tough afternoon ahead. Should be a stronger bench this afternoon which will help. All to play for, cmon lads.

No changes to the starting eleven or the bench surprisingly. Chan and Traore must have been given the weekend off!! Line-up:

VAR reviewed a possible hand nal, against Joao in first minute but not given and would have been very harsh

Good effort by RAN just wide. Huge chance for Bees breaks to Maupay but Jose diverts it for a corner, then he makes an excellent save to keep out a Maupay header.

Cunha has a shot well stopped by Flekken. Now he is down hurt and needing attention after a challenge. Looks like he’s not OK to continue

Reguillon puts a great ball across our area which they can’t convert, RAN does really well in there before it’s smashed over the bar.

Wolves defend a free kick into the area well. JRB looking lively in possession. Hard work by RAN and he eventually gets a free kick on the wing which comes to nothing. Nelso gets a cornervafter lengthy possession by Wolves.

Lots of possession by Wolves but struggling to find a way through a packed defence. Great save by Flekken to keep put a Neto header after great play by Pablo.

3 added minutes announced as Mario puts a shot high & wide. Neto putsca ball over from the left but put out for a corner which is cleared. All Wolves since Bees scored but they are defending well. Toney has hardly seen the ball but Maupay has had several chances to score. Their goal came from a corner when Dawson lost his man and he headed home. Shame we have lost Cunha but Neto & Pablo are working well against an eleven man defence. Neto came closest to scoring for us with a header down in to the corner which was well saved by Flekken.
Half time: Wolves 0 Bees 1

No changes as we restart. Serabia gives away a foulthrow-in. He then sets RAN free who picks out Neto and his shot hits the post. Dawson sneaks in and heads the equaliser from an excellent cross by Neto. We need the benefit if the doubt on VAR review re: possible offside by Dawson, but given offside

More attacking by Wolves but RAN smashes the ball from one side of the pitch to the other!! Good defending by RAN to stop Roerslev.

A typical situation when Wolves have done all the attacking in this half and Bees scorewith a breakaway after a poor pas from our defence.

We're a mid table team playing in an effective dead rubber game..no chance of Europe or relegation. The level of apathy from the team no great shock I suppose.

Wolves have had some bad luck this afternoon with Cunha having to go offf injured, and when we did get an equaliser Dawson’s left foot was found to be offside. They have attacked relentlessly throughout the second half but have lacked the guile to greak down a ‘parked’ defence. Neto had more luck on the left side in the first half but has been kept on the right side since the break. Fraser has failed to have any impact as a striker in the second half. Bees have been very average, frequently resorting to cynical fouls but have taken two opportunities and the points.

What a thoroughly disappointing afternoon at Molineux.

We just never got going in the first half, Brentford started the match more swiftly and greater purpose and whilst we comfortably had the lion share of possession, we struggled to do anything with it bar a Neto header well saved towards the end of the half. Brentford scored after a period of pressure …… I could see it coming. So frustrating to see Cunha get injured and it really didn't help our cause one bit, not just in the first 45 but the whole match.

Second half we were much better with the initial subs and presented Brentford with some pressure. In all honesty I thought we’d score and it was no surprise when Dawson headed home for a deserved equaliser …… or so we all thought. I haven’t seen the pictures but it was completely gutting when VAR chalked the goal off. Good old VAR, the paying spectators friend!!

Our pressure continued until the expensive error in our defence which led to the Toney second at which point our drive fizzled out and we never looked like scoring after that.

0-2 FT and I think Brentford deserved the win overall, this despite their routine display of consummate time wasting ….. poor stuff.

I watched the match from a lovely padded seat just to the left of the half way line and amassed media in the Billy Quiet, but I’d have given it up for a windswept seat in the Graham Hughes corner on a freezing and wet day for a better result and 3 points. Mind you, it's always good to be back at Molineux and today was no exception, despite the final score.

Spurs next up at their place

Dawson's been fantastic for us and I'm sure he will continue to be but he was at fault for both goals sadly. Lots of people seem to be of the opinion that we should have signed a centre-forward and no doubt they will think it should be a priority in the summer but we've been scoring plenty and, although not scoring yesterday, it was only the fourth match we haven't scored in so far this season. On the other hand, we've only kept four clean sheets and have conceded eight goals in the last three matches. Strengthening the defence should be the priority. Fingers crossed that Cunha isn't out too long.
