Wolves Move Clear Of Chasing Duo

It came as a pleasant surprise to the Wolves Barmy Army that the sun does shine in Grimsby and once the traditional Fish and Chips were eaten it was time to take to the terraces and try and claim the all important three-points which would move us up into 5th place and only 3pts behind 3rd place. But more importantly, it was our game in hand over chasing Ipswich and Norwich City.

Dave Jones made just one change from the side which started against Rotherham at the weekend, Shaun Newton was dropped to the bench and George Ndah started on the right.

 However it was Grimsby who started applying the majority of the pressure on Wolves, and it took only 10 minutes for the first major incident in the game to occur. Denis Irwin, with his Champions League experience showed the mentality of a School Boy as he passed the ball across the face of his own goal, Murray failed to control but still managed to win the ball before the Mariners advancing striker was able to latch onto the ball.

 But on 13 Minutes Nathan Blake took the lead for Wolves when he chased on to a through-ball from Miller and smashed a low driver under the body of Coyne into the far corner of the net after losing Grimsby defender George Santos.

 Grimsby failed to trouble Murray in the Wolves goal as Ince really should have doubled the lead but his header from a Kennedy cross was inches wide, Miller should also have scored but his shot, provided from Kennedy again was knocked past the near post.

 Grimsby had most of the possession in the second half, but a Santos header which was saved by Murray was the closest Grimsby came.

 Minutes into the second half Blake had another chance to double his and Wolves tally but was denied by a superb save from the impressive Danny Coyne.

 Cooper also came close late on but those were the only real chances in what was a very poor second half.

 The result lifts Wolves into 5th place but more importantly 6pts clear of 7th place. But sadly, its looking very grim for Grimsby, but if they continue to show the work rate they showed against Wolves they are most certainly in with a chance of avoiding the drop....again.
