A Wolves Fan was injured today in a freak accident involving a firework as the players of Wolverhampton Wanderers and Newcastle United entered the Molineux Pitch for todays 1-1 draw.

It is not unusual for Fireworks to be used on the Molineux Pitch as the two sets of teams enter the field prior to a game, but today, disaster struck.

Four of the 5 fireworks went off as planned, however one took off in the wrong direction, flying horizontal to the pitch and landing into the Family Enclosure of the Billy Wright Stand.

A Female Wolves fan was struck in the face by the firework whilst 8 others were treated for shock.

The Female fan has suffered a gash under her eye and a suspected broken jaw, and as expected, was very shaken up.

Stewards and Paramedics, including the Newcastle United team doctor were on the scene instantly and did a good job in sorting out the delicate situation and ensuring the game, screened Live by SKY Sports, went ahead as planned.

A statement from Wolves read "We are deeply sorry for the incident that occurred at Molineux ahead of this afternoon's match. A full investigation has been launched into exactly what happened."

Wolves Chief Executive Jez Moxey added "Our sympathies and apologies go with her as a Wolves fan who came to watch the game with her family and has had to go to hospital.

"We have sent a delegation with her to the hospital and will be talking to her. As far as we know she is still in hospital.

"Our stewards and medical staff were on the scene immediately and did an outstanding job. As far as I'm concerned there will be no more fireworks at Molineux as a result of this incident.

"A full investigation is underway and I am speaking here for both the club and the local council."

Wolvesfc.co.uk would like to send out best wishes to all concerned in the accident prior to the game.
