WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS have today responded to comments made in today's Express And Star by Wolves Club Captain Paul Butler.

Twelve Wolves players contracts run out in the summer, but Wolves are standing by their decision to not offer any contracts to players until the league status next season is certain.

Paul Butler today claimed that the club were taking the "easy way out" in not offering players new contracts in an interview in which he slammed the Clubs decision.

Butler, who has been inspirational for Wolves this season said earlier "We go into work each day, trying to stay positive, wanting to be up-beat and knowing we are in the fight of our lives. But all the time you're wondering if the club gives a damn about you."

Butler also believes that the players out of contract in the summer should be offered contracts based around both Premiership and Nationwide salaries  "OK, they don't know which division we'll be in next season. But what's to stop them talking to us based on us being either in the Premiership or the First Division? That's all the players are asking.

"We're not daft. We know the club will not have as much money in the First Division. We're not going to be asking for stupid money. I haven't even thought about the money - it's the security that is important."

The players out of contract in the summer include Paul Ince, Steffen Iversen, Vio Ganea and Alex Rae, but Wolves Chief Executive Jez Moxey is standing by the clubs decision not to offer new contracts yet.

"We have already stated publicly - and privately to the players - that we will not begin contract negotiations until our divisional status has been confirmed" Said Moxey.

"It is difficult to negotiate new contracts when the club's future is undecided and we will therefore address the issue at the end of the season"
