DENIS IRWIN today retired from football after 22 years and 902 games. However the Irish defender was quick to show is affection for his boyhood club Wolves, Leeds United, Oldham Athletic and Manchester United.

Denis Irwin left the pitch after 89 minutes to a standing ovation from both set's of fans at a sun-kissed Molineux Stadium today.

The Irish defender, who has won more than any other player in the country was visibly touched by the gesture as he ended a career which lasted 22 years and 902 games.

“It’s been emotional today and I have to say that as I came off the pitch it finally began to sink in that that’s it, I have had a fantastic life in the game and I have enjoyed every minute. My only disappointment is that it has come to an end with us facing relegation." Said Denis.

“I am proud of all my achievements and have enjoyed it all, some people would give their right arm for just a small part of what I have had in the game and I am thankful for 22 and a half wonderful years."

Irwin, a Wolves Fan was quick to give a mention to his three previous clubs, Leeds United, Oldham Athletic and Manchester United.

“I have huge affection for this club and every one that I’ve been at," says Denis. "I’m thankful to Leeds for giving me my first chance. I had four great years at Oldham and, obviously, my time at Man United was superb. But I have also had a truly fantastic two years with Wolves. I was a fan as a boy and I’ve had a great time here. I have no regrets."

Wolvesfc.co.uk would like to pass our sincere thanks to a great professional and we wish him all the very best in his life outside of the great game.
