It was the 16th October 2003 and Wolves had released a press-conference stating that former Lazio, Newcastle, Suprs and Rangers star 'Gazza' had trained with Wolves.

The news came as a shock, but a pleasant shock. It stated in the statement that the former England great was training with Wolves in a bid to get himself fit for another club.

Gazza played in several reserve games and some parts of the media believed that Gazza would be earning a contract not at another club in a lower league, but in the Premiership with Wolverhampton Wanderers. However on the 28th November 2003 Gazza left Wolves.

"Gazza has decided he won't be able to cut it at Premier League level and you have to give him a slap on the back for his honesty," Dave Jones said at the time.

However it wasn't that simple. In a review by The Times Gazza admits that not making the grade and not winning a contract at Wolves broke his heart.

The piece by the times is written in "diary format" by Gazza as he talks about his heartbreak at not being offered a contract.

"At the back of my mind I suppose I was half-hoping that I might get a contract out of them [Wolves]. Not a big one, obviously. But now, sitting here in my hotel, I've had to admit to myself that it's not going to work. Wolves are not going to give me a contract, however titchy. It's heartbreaking, but I might as well acknowledge that that's it. I feel devastated."

In a stirring article, the former England funny-guy opens his heart to his life fueled by drink.
