| Cardiff City will face
First Division promotion hopefuls Sheffield United in the third round of the
F.A Cup, with the game likely to take place on January 3rd.
The two sides were paired together in the second tie drawn out of the hat in this afternoons draw, which followed Hartlepool United's victory over Burton Albion. City last faced Sheffield United in the FA Cup run of 1998/1999, when the Bluebirds travelled to Brammal Lane for a Fourth Round tie, backed by City fans hopeful of a place in the last 16 of the world's greatest domestic cup competition. However, City were outclassed, with Sheffield United running out 4-1 victors. Super Kevin Nugent was on target for the visitors. The Yorkshire side also beat the Bluebirds in the 1925 FA Cup final. It's a draw that could have been better, and could have been worst. I was personally hoping for a clash with the Jacks, who instead drew a money spinning tie against Cambridge United or Macclesfield Town! Still, this tie will be an excellent footballing contest, with home advantage giving City a fair chance of a place in the 4th round. The tie of the round looks like Liverpool's visit to Huish Park to face Yeovil Town, who have a history of Cup upsets. Arsenal's visit to Elland Road and Watford's tie against Premiership leaders Chelsea also look like being fascinating ties. It's also worth pointing out that 6 of the ties are games played in the Football League on Saturday - only in the FA Cup! The complete draw for the third round is as follows: Wimbledon v Stoke City Ties will be played on the weekend of the 3rd and 4th of January. |
