Gordon Signs for Notts County

Bluebirds striker Gavin Gordon has completed a move to Third Division outfit Notts County. The 23-year-old forward was told he was free to find a new club by Lennie Lawrence last month, with the Nottinghamshire outfit fighting off competition from a number of clubs to secure Gordon's signature.

Bluebirds forward Gavin Gordon has joined Notts County on a free transfer after being told he was free to find a new club by Cardiff City manager Lennie Lawrence. He had been strongly linked with a move to Oxford United after impressing on a brief loan spell their last season, but Notts County have fought off competition from the U's and a series of other Football League clubs to sign the striker.

Gordon was given the option to stay at Ninian Park and fight for a new contract over pre-season if he failed to find a club, but with a number of strikers ahead of the target man in the pecking order and the expected immergence of Stuart Fleetwood from the reserves next season, a move away from Ninian Park is surely the best move for him.

“He’s a striker that’s been top of my list for a while, and I am delighted to sign him. I’ve brought him to the club to score us goals, and I’m confident he will do that." said Notts County manager Gary Mills.

"He’s a big lad and is the target man who I have been looking for and I am very pleased that he’s signed for us despite plenty of clubs chasing him.”

The 23-year-old made the move to South Wales from Lincoln City during the 2000/2001 season for an initial fee of £275,000, which rose to double that figure after appearances. However, he rarely made the impact many had hoped with a series of injuries and big-name signings preventing Gordon ever putting together a good run in the first-team.

He will be best remembered by the City faithful for a 5-goal stunning performance during City's 7-1 LDV Vans Trophy First Round victory over Rushden & Diamonds, with a crowd of little over 2,000 watching Gordon tear apart the Northamptonshire outfit. A goal infront of the Sky cameras at Highfield Road during last season and an impressive run of performances when injuries to Thorne and Lee allowed him in kept hopes alive of a new contract for the striker, but the club decided it was best to part company with Gordon.
