AFC Bournemouth are the opponents for Cardiff City in the third round of the League Cup. City will make the trip south after the Cherries stunned Mark Hughes' Blackburn Rovers with a penalty shoot-out victory at Ewood Park.

Cardiff City will face AFC Bournemouth in the third round of the League Cup following Tuesday night’s draw for the Carling-sponsored competition.

City supporters had been planning a visit to Ewood Park after the draw was made live on Sky television. However, Bournemouth came from behind in extra-time to tie 3-3 with the Lancastrian giants, then stunned their Premiership opponents with a penalty shoot-out victory in sudden death to book a home tie against the Bluebirds.

Cardiff scraped into the second round with a spot-kicks win over Kidderminster Harriers, before comprehensively outplaying Milton Keynes Dons with a 4-1 scoreline to reach this stage. A cup run could be on the cards, which would excite Bluebirds fans after a dismal start to the season in the Football League.

The last meeting between the two sides was in the LDV Vans Trophy third round during the 2002/2003 promotion campaign. City were knocked out in by a golden goal to lose 2-1 on a bitterly disappointing and cold night for the travelling faithful!

The full draw, which has produced some interesting ties, is as follows:

Portsmouth v Leeds
Chelsea v West Ham
Middlesbrough v Coventry
Doncaster v Nottingham Forest
Newcastle v Norwich
Millwall v Liverpool
Burnley v Aston Villa
Southampton v Colchester
Sheff Utd v Watford
Everton v Leicester/Preston
Charlton v Crystal Palace
Bolton v Tottenham
AFC Bournemouth v Cardiff City
Man City v Arsenal
Birmingham v Fulham
Crewe v Man Utd
