Spurs on this day No 38 - FA Cup 5th Round Replay - Opponents Nottingham Forest
As we have already looked at previous FA cup encounters with Nottingham Forest for the first game I thought I would look at something different and as its the chinese year of the rooster lets have a quick glance at the previous Rooster years. Starting with 1993 and the fifth round was a home tie against Wimbledon which we won 3-1 with Darren Anderton, Teddy Sheringham and Nick Barmby scoring the goals.
1981 is covered in the winning years below so back to the tie in 1969 which saw us hold Liverpool to a 1-1 draw at home (Jimmy Greaves on the scoresheet this time) only to lose the replay 2-1 at Anfield. Cliff Jones getting our only goal that night.
1957 and a nightmare as we crashed out at the fifth round stage to Bournemouth & Boscombe by a humiliating 3-1 scoreline with only Terry Medwin finding the net for us.
No FA cup in 1945 because of the war so back to 1933 and no joy there either as we were knocked out at the fourth round stage, 2-0 by Luton.
1921 and again this is listed below in the winning years so that leaves 1909 and the old 3rd round. Burnley survived a 0-0 draw at White hart Lane only to win the replay at Turf Moor 3-1 with our goal coming from Ernie Coquet.
Only one more before that and again no luck from the chinese year of the rooster (although to be fair the cockerel was not adopted as our emblem until 1909) and again Luton knocked us out, 4-3 this time at our then Northumberland Park Ground at the 4th qualifying round stage after we had despatched the Coldstream Guards 7-0 in the third qualifying round.
So perhaps the year of the rooster is not as lucky as we would like to believe. Maybe there are other memorable replays at this stage of the competition we can draw heart from. Well, the answer to that is of course yes and first of all lets look at the 24th February 1999. We had travelled to Elland Road and played out a tense 1-1 draw and earned ourselves a replay with Tim Sherwood netting for us. Once again it was a tense night but who can forget the two memorable goals that earned us a place in the sixth round. Darren Anderton and David Ginola silencing the Leeds supporters with two superb strikes. Ginola then scored another brilliant individual goal at Barnsley in the sixth round in a tie that had to be re-arranged after snow had forced the postponment of the first match, and so on to a Semi Final at Old Trafford against Newcastle and a tale of two handballs. The one they got and the one we didn't. We owe them one for that.
Finally another FA Cup 5th round replay to remember and we only have to go back a bit further to the 1st March 1995 and that night in Southampton. The first match was a fairly poor 1-1 draw with only Klinsmanns goal to cheer us and at 2-0 down at half time at the Dell it looked like another embarrassing defeat for us. Then the inspired introduction of supersub Ronnie Rosenthal by manager Gerry Francis and the game was turned upside down as we took it into extra time and eventually ran out 6-2 winners. An unforgettable night on the south coast as Ronnie got his hat-trick and Teddy Sheringham, Nick Barmby and Darren Anderton completed the rout. Again though, shame about the semi-final that year especially after a superb win at Anfield in the sixth round.
Now for a reminder once again of the Cup winning years,
1901 and we beat Reading 3-0 in a replay after a 1-1 draw in the first game.
1921 and another 3rd round tie away, this time at Southend United. 11,600 fans at this game saw us win this one 4-1 on a night when three different Jimmys have scored in one game for us.
1961 and our fifth round opponents on 18th February were Aston Villa at Villa Park. 65,474 witnessed this one as we beat them 2-1.
The following year (1962) we were drawn away again, this time to West Bromwich Albion on 17th February and a 4-2 win watched by a crowd of 53,539.
On to 11th March 1967 a home game against Bristol City. 54,610 saw us win this one 2-0
1981, 14th February and it was Coventry Citys turn to be knocked out of the cup at White Hart Lane by a 3-0 scoreline.
On the 13th February 1982 a crowd of 43,419 saw Mark Falco score the only goal of the game as we knocked Aston Villa out in the fifth round again.
And finally to 1991 and the fifth round 2-1 away win at Portsmouth.
