Latham Park to stage to Loosemores Final

Newtown's GF Grigg Latham Park will be the venue for the Loosemores Cup Final on Sunday 5th April 2009, with a 2:30pm Kick-Off.

The match will be contested by Nev Powell's Bangor City, who have never won the Competition and Dr. Andy Cale's The New Saints, who last won the Trophy in 2005/06 when they beat Port Talbot Town at Aberystwyth's Park Avenue.

The Competition was won by Llanelli AFC last year, who beat Rhyl in the Final, which was also played at Newtown, who have a wealth of experience at hosting Cup Finals as well as European Matches.

After a long consultation process with a number of different venues and the two participating clubs, it was agreed by all three parties that Latham Park would be the preferred Stadium.

Bangor City FC won the Welsh Cup at the Ground last year, but the hysteria over the dramatic Christian Seargeant late equaliser, led to a Pitch Invasion by a minority of the Bangor supporters, for which they were subsequently charged and fined by the Football Association of Wales.

The Welsh Premier League will meet with Officials from TNS, Bangor City, Newtown AFC and the local Police in advance of the game to ensure a thorough Risk Assessment is in place for the game. Further details of this will follow as will ticket Information.

w-p.co.uk's opinion is that hopefully the final will be known for a good game of football between both sides without the minority spoiling it. It will be interesting to see whether the FAW and the stewarding/police have learnt the lessons from the Welsh Cup Final and what measures will be taken to ensure the safety of the supporters and spectators alike.
