People often ask me how (and why) I started watching Bangor City and not a “proper team” First things first – I want to point out that me watching city is far more of a “proper team” than Cofi Man Yoo fans, Colwyn Bay Scousers or Machynlleth Leeds boys. I guess many of us that are City have been asked the same thing over the years and it never gets any less irritating to somehow feel you have to justify why you follow your home town side and not some Premiership millionaires. Football, to me, is about passion, commitment and taking the highs with the lows. And above all, actually being there to see it happen. My first Bangor City match was more by accident than design. I went to school with Barry Ashworth’s lad and he got us some “comps” when I was seven or eight and it sort of went from there. My ninth birthday party involved my Dad taking six or seven of us down Farrar Road followed by a knicker-bocker-glory at the Wimpy. (Long since disappeared and now the Boots opticians) Missed a few games during the late 80’s through a combination of a Saturday job and the fear of getting battered! Went to Wembley though and many other places besides. Missed a few more soon after the formulation of the League of Wales when I was living in that there London. (I’m no Jimmy “Distance no object” Peters!) In my defence, I did check all the scores every Saturday night and get to as many games as I was able to. Its been said that I’m playing “catch up” in terms of my support and, to a certain extent, that’s true, but in the past four years I’ve probably missed less than 6 games in total and that’s including the North Wales Coast Cup!! I’ve done 1,000’s of miles by land, sea and air to watch my Blue Army and “brought a mate – double the gate” to League, Cup and European games. I’ve sold totes to people at work, stood in the freezing cold giving (poor) interviews in Welsh and English, sold half time raffles, written for programmes, run petitions and all manner of other things in between. I’ve drunk with players, managers and chairmen and been fleeced at cards! Don’t get me wrong, I’m not looking for any kind of recognition here and there are many, many other City fans who have done, and continue to do, far more than me, all I’m trying to say is that for all the perceived glamour of the Premiership, how many fans of those teams could say they are so close to the team they follow. I’ll tell you – not bloody many! To me, City is, and always will be, a “proper” team. C’monnn!!!
