Veronica MacGregor - Supporters Rep

Airdrie United supporters have appointed Veronica MacGregor their representative on the new Airdrie board. We offered Veronica the chance to air her thoughts for all to see on 'The Broomfield Stomp', and Veronica was only too willing to oblige...

It’s been quite a week so far, and there are still a few days to go. Despite the low turn out, Wednesday saw a Supporters Representative elected to work alongside the Board for the first time. The last three years have been the most difficult ever for Airdrie fans, and there were times when I thought we would never be able to overcome the obstacles that were constantly put in our way. But overcome them we did, and it would be impossible to thank individually everyone who helped to do that – people who gave up all their free time and more, queued to use the telephone on oil rigs, put work and business on the back burner and whose wives and partners allowed us to invade their home and kept us going on coffee and biscuits.

Now the ball is firmly back in our court. If we don’t take this opportunity to get involved with our club then all this effort will have been for nothing. I noticed a posting from Chris MacMillan which was along similar lines and ended with the words ‘just in case’. He’s absolutely right. The just in case scenario could apply to almost every club in Scotland today. Nobody knows what the future holds for Scottish football, never mind Airdrie, and we have to be ready ‘just in case’ I can’t make people come to Supporters meetings if they don’t want to, and I know there are some who can’t manage for various reasons, but you can phone or e-mail me. If you don’t take part, you can’t complain if the things you want discussed or sorted aren’t. There are many people out there with good ideas and I want to hear from them. I’ve already had telephone calls and e-mails about a variety of subjects, including:

  • If we get promoted at the end of this season, will we be going full time ?
  • Are the board going to have the money to sign new players if needed in January ?
  • Can we set up a savings scheme for next year’s season tickets ?
  • Are we going to be holding social/fund raising/Christmas parties ?
  • If we raise money throughout the year will it be going to the club, and if it is, what will we get in return ?
  • Can we get something done about the tannoy system ?
  • What about free tickets for schoolkids ?
  • What can we do about the lack of vocal support at home games ?
  • Should we be looking at closing down the Fans Forum after last week’s bad publicity and only using sites where offensive postings under the guise of Airdrie fan can be removed ?

    A couple of these points have already been addressed e.g. tickets for schoolkids, vocal support ( although I think we need to have a rethink on this one after Saturday).

    Finally, I’ll always think of this club as Airdrieonians, a wee change in the name doesn’t mean we’re different people.

    p.s. could anybody make sure we get a decent draw in the next round of the CIS Cup?
