At last the first challenge match between the established 'Swally' boys and the 'Stomp Allstars' took place on Saturday morning on a sodden pitch at Central Park in Airdrie. The match came about at short notice due the Swally's match being cancelled.
The Stomp Allstars lined up in their borrowed yellow (Albion R*v*rs looking) kit supplied graciously by midfield general Humo against the Internazioswally boys in their home Airdrie tops. It was the youngsters who took the game to the more experienced team though with young Atkin up front terrorising the admittedly well marshalled, by Chris Mac and Colin, Swally defence. The Stomper's took the lead through a disputed penalty when Upfer was upended in the penalty area and Jeff the Ref had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Upfer dusted himself down to slot home. Further goals from Boywonder and Upfer had us on easy street by half time. The Swally's best chance came when centre forward 'big Tam' had a good chance but his goal bound effort was charged down by yours truly. Second half there was a bit of a revival for the Swally with a goal pulled back early on (typically I had been subbed for Trenchie at that point I must point out) but further goals from RG, after a Humo 'Beckham like' free kick was spilled, Ally, and another Klaus Augenthaler like 25 yarder from RG the goal of the game. Best goal of the game surely came near the end. Myself, back on for an aching Upfer, supplied a sublime (believe that if you will, beauty is in the eye of the beholder) cutback from the byeline for Trenchie to slot home. 7-1. A good game played on a shocking pitch. Great contributions for the Stompers from Johnny Onions in goal, Diamond Gord, Stuart and RG in defence, Boywonder and Pardoe on the wings and the Alan Lawrence like Atkin up front. Hopefully there'll be a rematch soon? The Stomp Allstars
