Stevie Cooper R.I.P.
By Chris Mac
February 17 2004
I think I speak for most Airdrie Fans when I say I am still in shock after hearing about the death of Stevie Cooper. To say we are gutted is an under statement.
As a tribute, I would like every one to post something within the thread Diamond Jim began and I will add it to this story as a tribute. It can then be printed out and sent with our best wishes to his family.
I Hope this meets with everyones approval.

Got us to the cup final, in goals at Morton, somersaults after goals and many more. Sincere condolences to his family who we met in York at pre-season a few years back. Yes, a very
sad loss. Scored many a goal for us and, like several others I too was there
when he scored a hat-trick ( in the first half if I remember correctly?) at
Somerset Park where he executed, for the first time in an Airdrie jersey, his
sommersault celebration.
Condolences to his family.

Very, very sad
news, found this though (From a football and business paper/essay )that brought
a wee smile to my face....
How do you think he is? He scored an own goal in the first leg and missed a
penalty tonight. He’ll be all right after a couple of years in Siberia.
Alex MacDonald, Airdrie manager, on Steve Cooper's part in a play-off defeat by
Hibernian, 1997.

Never Be
Forgotten!
R.I.P big man
Smashing player Steve Cooper. As a York City fan he didn't play for us long but I remember him being able to jump higher than any player I've ever seen at Bootham Crescent. Referees used to penalise him 'cos they didn't believe anyone could jump that high without fouling. Loved his celebrations.
RIP Stevie, thanks for the memories.
Rot Weiß Papagei
Who can forget that back page of the "Daily Ranger" of him scoring a header in the cup-semi against Hearts while wearing a super-imposed Superman costume!

Firstly I'd like to take the time to pass on my most sincere condolences, firstly to Stevie's family and secondly to all his friends. To say that the man was an Airdrie legend is certainly not overstating just how important he became to Airdrieonians Football Club and also it's supporters. He embodied everything that diamonds supporters have always looked for in a player, a man who when things weren't going well certainly didn't look for a hiding place, but instead rolled up his sleeves and worked his bloody socks off, a man who never shirked a challenge and went in for a good few he really shouldn't have stood a chance of winning but did. In the short period of time that Stevie played for us he showed the attitude that any fan of the club would have shown if given the chance to play with a diamond on his jersey and that's no mean feat for a guy who probably hadn't heard of us until he was approached to sign. He was one of the most honest workmanlike professionals that I have ever had the privilege of watching wear the diamond. It was a sad day for most of us when Stevie left the club but it says a lot about the guy that there was no animosity shown toward him when he went to darkest Ayrshire and a better contract than we could probably have given him at the time. There's nothing wrong with looking after the interests of your family after all.I've still got loads of video highlights of games that Stevie played for us and I dare say the tapes will take an even bigger battering now than they did previously, in fact I might even make a copy for the club to show some of the youngsters so they too can know how much it should mean to them to play for this club.He will be sadly missed by myself and my son, who when he had just learned to talk I had him remember the name Stevie Cooper as a response when asked who his favourite player was. Thanks for all the fantastic memories Stevie.

Apart from Justin Fashanu, Stevie is the first player to pass away that I actually saw playing for Airdrie. And what a player he was, one of the best. A genuine shock and an absolute tragedy.

Stevie Cooper was an Airdrie legend the minute the ball left his head in the semi against Hearts. he played in agony during that game if i remember, had bother with his toe but still helped us pull off a great victory.

When we were going for promotion and stevie went in goals against Partick was one of my favourite games of all-time. He could chest down the odd shot and almost put bye kicks into the oppositions box. Fantastic in the air and i have seen few people shoot harder. A true gentleman that had lots of time for people. Deepest Condolences to his family and friends. Thank you for the great memories, you made some of my lasting memories of Airdrieonians football club very special. For this i am truly grateful.
