By The Stomp Team Date: 16/11/2000 The Semi Final tie with Stranraer is today's offering in "The Road To Broadwood". A Cold Tuesday night in the west coast town was not what I needed as my wife had just got home from hospital after having our second daughter but travel I did and it was well worth it in the end.

Bells Challenge Cup Semi Final

Stranraer V Airdrie

The trip down the west coast was well worth it as The Diamonds staked their place in the cup final against Livingston.

Once again this was no easy tie but by this time the players were starting to gel as a unit and in the end won their place with hard work but as the match report explains, they didn't have it all their own way.

The Match Report

Stranraer 2 Airdrie 4 aet

The diamonds booked their place in the Bells Challenge Cup Final with a 4-2 win after extra time.

Airdrie started the game very positively and went one up within ten minutes of the game starting when Fernandez stuck the ball in the net after a good move on the left from the diamonds.

Airdrie looked set to over run Stranraer but the home side stuck to their task and equalised almost straight away. It was then the turn of Airdrie to go ahead again with another Fernandez strike, Stranraer then duely went back up the park and levelled the tie again!!!!

The rest of the match was pretty much a midfield battle and the condition of the park was not conducive to good football, it seemed to be very soft and the length of the grass would have suited the horses at Ayr racecourse better than football players.

The match then went in to extra time and Airdrie seemed to look a fitter side than Stranraer. The diamonds then went on to finish off the home side. Stuart Taylor grabbed the third when he headed home a corner kick and Stephen McKeown netted the fourth when he connected with a cut back from Fernandez.
