Airdrie Utd play host to Antonio Calderon's Raith Rovers side in the first round of the Challenge Cup. For the first time I can remember, a team will defend a Cup won by another side. Can the Diamonds complete a truly unique Challenge Cup hat-trick?
All Airdrieonians bar none will be keen to offer a warm welcome to the Excelsior Stadium to a former hero in Antonio Calderon. The majestical Spaniard, nicknamed 'The Sorceror' during his star studded six months in the town, is the new Raith player manager now of course. Not only that but his team has a familar look about it with Airdrie legend Andy Smith, Darren Brady and Martin Prest in their ranks too. Despite the obvious warm welcome Sandy Stewart's Airdrie United will be looking to get one over on our Division 2 rivals as well as defending the previous 'Airdrie's' trophy. Sandy has reportedly signed a Hamilton player named Darren Miller ahead of the tie, but don't expect too many changes from Saturday. Look possibly for Armstrong to replace Boyle, McGuire to replace Ronald, and possibly Harvey for Gardner. Raith don't have their problems to seek. It's not clear if Martin Prest will start following his triple yellow, sending off in their opening league defeat. Despite Calderon's undoubted managerial potential, a sprinkling of talented Spaniards and experience like Smith and Dennis, Raith have a few youngsters filling in the gaps and this may offer Airdrie a chance in this one. Kick off was announced by the club for 7.45pm and the tie will be played to a finish. Get along and shout on the Diamonds. You never know, there may be another journey to Broadwood to look forward to.
