1979 Stats

It was an extremely cold day when we took on York City FC at The City Ground in January 1979, in fact it was snowing. Anyway, we were equipped with the best footwear available at the time and also with an orange football for identification purposes.

We had an army of volunteers at The City Ground bright and early making sure that the game was okay to go ahead as the biggest threat to the game taking place at the schelduled time was the state of the terraces. These volunteers, armed with shovels, did manage to clear them and the game went on as planned and we took on the then Fourth Division side with a 'giant killing' reputation.

There was no suprise however and we managed to come out as victors winning 3-1 on the day. Larry Lloyd had slotted in a spectacular goal after going on a mission upfield, Jophn McGovern had volleyed home a second and current Celtic manager Martin O'Neill managed to score the third for us.

After the game Larry Lloyd commented on the game, his goal and the team's overall performance. "Throughout my time at Forest it was largely about defending and trying not to concede goals because we had too many attacking options in the side."

"But I picked up the ball at York and the space was wide open so I thought, why not? Anyway, the important thing was that we got teh result and won fairly comfortably in the end."

The Reds would go on to score many other great goals that season which proved to be one of the most successful in the club's history.
