Red Devils legend Roy Keane believes the form of Wayne Rooney will be crucial as England prepare for the World Cup finals in South Africa. The Ipswich Town boss, however, has tipped England to bow out of the competition at the quarter-final or semi-final stage.

Speaking to Ipswich Town's official website, Keane said: "England have proved many times before that they can get out of their group and the group is very good for them in South Africa.

"People say there are no easy games but there are, especially when you are playing some of the smaller nations that may not have played in the tournament before.

"It allows the big teams to feel their way into the World Cup but when it comes to the crunch games, that's where it has been the biggest disappointment for England.

"Whether it be at the quarter-finals or the semis, they have gone out and I feel it will be the same this year. It could be against Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Germany - I feel they may come up a bit short.

Keane, however, has hinted that England may have the ability to repeat their heroics of 1966 if frontman Rooney performs to his full potential throughout the tournament.

He added: "A lot will depend on Wayne Rooney. He's had a long, hard season but if he's had a rest and can produce his top form then England have a chance."

Im pretty much in agreement with Roy.

I reckon its possible England could do it, very possible, but will probably come up that little bit short.

Hopefully, penalty defeat to Germany in the final (Sm139)

Quarter-finals for me too. Rooney IS crucial, indeed; if he doesn't perform then England are screwed.
