Wayne Rooney is hoping to break Sir Bobby Charlton’s Manchester United goalscoring record. The Red Devils legend retired one goal shy of 250 club goals – but Rooney is eager to smash that long-standing record after surpassing 150 United goals on the weekend.

Rooney bagged a hat-trick on Sunday as United secured a stunning 8-2 win over London rivals Arsenal.

His goalscoring heroics - which included two free-kicks - took his United tally to 152 goals.

The former Everton man has now set his sights on Charlton's amazing goalscoring record at United.

Sir Bobby netted 249 goals during an illustrious career with the club.

After Sunday's game, Rooney said: "I was aware I was one off 150 before the game.

"I asked how many Bobby Charlton scored. Giggsy (Ryan Giggs) said I had another 100 to go. That is a target. Hopefully I will do it in the next few years."
