Ten months ago, Wayne Rooney shocked English football by claiming that Manchester United did not match his ambition and that he was looking for a move away from the club. His stunning hat-trick during the 8-2 demolition of Arsenal yet again proved just how wrong he was - and Rooney now accepts that remaining at the club was the best decision he ever made.
Rooney's name was splashed all over the headlines as he announced that he would not be signing a new contract with United as the club did not match his ambition.
The Red Devils looked set to sell their star striker - with fierce rivals City, Barcelona and Real Madrid all mentioned as possibile destinations for the former Everton frontman.
However, Rooney soon made a remarkable U-turn and put pen-to-paper on a new deal with the club.
He would see a patchy run of form end in February 2011, scoring a number of key goals - including a memorable hat-trick at West Ham and United's Champions League final goal.
This season, he already has five goals to his name and bagged a mouth-watering hat-trick of set-piece goals during the drubbing of Arsenal at Old Trafford.
The 25-year-old said: "I’m thankful I ended up staying and signing because I said at the time after I signed my new contract that I had made a mistake and I owed performances and goals to the fans for what happened,"
"It’s the best decision I’ve made in football career.
"To still be there and enjoying it, winning things and seeing the team coming through and playing the way it is, is fantastic".
