Wayne Rooney is confident that Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea will prove a big hit at Old Trafford. The shot stopper has come in for criticism from many pundits after a slow start to life in the North West.

De Gea was guilty of high-profile errors in the Community Shield clash with Manchester City and the Premier League opener at West Bromwich Albion.

The player has not produced such glaring errors in subsequent games - but many commentators and experts feel his start to life at Old Trafford has not been promising.

Rooney, however, is confident that De Gea will produce the goods to match his hefty price tag and become a hit with the United faithful.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, he said: “David is obviously a good shot-stopper. I hadn’t seen much of him before he signed, but that was something I saw immediately. Also his passing out from the back is alongside Edwin’s. He rarely kicks long to a forward,

“He is still young and has probably got a lot to learn, but he is working hard and doing well in training. He is a strong character. After the Manchester City game, and then West Brom, he didn’t seem to be affected.

“He was on the training pitch the next day, working hard. The last couple of games he’s done well for us and he will only get better the more he plays,"

He's ot exactly VDS but he was never gonna be, gonna take him time, just hope everyone can remain patient with him. Goalkeepers are judged VERY quickly, and confidence can get shattered...
