The Soons Report : Reserves beaten by Wednesday

For my first match reporting on the reserves this season I have reported on the 2nd string's latest defeat, a very time and lifeless defeat to Sheffield Wednesday's reserves at Sincil Bank. The game seemed to be heading for a 0-0 draw to kick off the season but two poor examples of goalkeeping from Ayden Duffy gifted the win to the visitors, as City reserves yet again suffered a defeat.

Following the mediocre performance of the reserves in last year's Pontins League campaign, they were set the challenge of playing the league winners of lasts years Pontins Central Division, who only lost 3 time last season.

The crowd was sparse and a few recognised faces were in the crowd. Apart from the usual fans following of which 40 or 50 were present, the management teams including The Two Johns were as cosey as ever and the scouting party were in attendance, including Stuart McCall, the manager of City's first team opponents next week, Bradford City.

The teams mainly consisted of youngsters with City putting out First Team contenders Wright, Warlow, Ryan, Roddy and Croft. Sheff Wed Reserves included the experienced members of Gilbert and Bullen.

At a sunny Sincil Bank, Sheff Wed got the procedings underway, and the chances of the first half were limited with few chances on target and a few meaningful threats to the Sheff Wed goal. There were a few late challeneges and the referee decided to call the half to an end after 3 minutes of injury time.

The second half started as the first finished, very quiet again for the first 20 minutes. After a few injuries to sheff wed players, Olly Ryan had the best chance of the game for the Imps, as a twisting shot crashed against the bar on 73 minutes. Within a Few seconds Matt Bowman scores a looping header for Wednesday to take the lead 1-0.

Again imps were short of ideas and their ridgid 4-4-2 formation didnt help them to venture forward to attack. In the 85th minute City gave away a needless free kcik on the edge of the area. With the wall carefully placed Duffy took his staNce, and Jason Bowman nicely slotted the ball inside the right corner without Duffy making virtually no effort being made to save it.

The match ended with a couple of rash challenges from Imps players, which brought about yellow cards, one for Watt on 89 minutes and one for Ryan in the final minute.

Not really a memorable reserves match but hopefully it will bring about experience and fitness to the players whom are bordering first team and hopefully the next home fixture at home v Darlington on the 12th September at 2pm will prove more fruitful for the Imps.
