Sutton : "Oakes is a fantastic player"

Lincoln City's Stefan Oakes has found himself being praised as the best player in League Two by Chris Sutton. The manager appointed Oakes as captain for the game against Aldershot and has quite clearly been impressed with what he has seen so far.

Stefan Oakes has not really established himself as a first team player since he joined during the summer of 2008. He impressed many with his quality ball distribution early on, but quickly became quite injury prone and his laid-back approach to playing didn't go down well with some fans. Peter Jackson also wasn't impressed, telling the midfielder that he was free to find another club.

After an impressive start to the season, his appearances linking in with the only half-decent City performances, he was again injury prone but with the appointment of Sutton as manager, Oakes has suddenly found himself as a spearhead of Sutton's City.

"In this league, I don't think there's anyone with Stefan Oakes' talent. I think he's a fantastic player and has got a left foot players in higher divisions would dream of. Sutton added: "I want to get the best out of him - I want to win games - and a fit Stefan Oakes would be a fantastic asset to Lincoln City," Sutton told the BBC.

Oakes was made captain for last Saturday's game against Aldershot, putting in a good performance and he now appears to be one of the key figures in what could turn out to be an unexpected season of a high midtable/Top 10 push.

i was one of the people hoping oakes would find a new club in the summer, but i have changed my mind. when he has played he has played well.

I actually think Sutton may well be right. Anybody with 2 eyes and more than a passing interest in football should surely see that he has a quality that players at this level lack. Unfortunately, he needs a team built around his strengths and weaknesses, and Jackson was never tactically astute enough to do this. Let's hope Sutton is!

I think Stefan has alot to offer us, its just a matter of him staying fit & injury free i think, its got to do his confidence no end of good to recieve such praise from his gaffer..

Sutton has said he is going to build te team around him to maximise his abilities.
Lets hope he does.
