Exeter City's St James' Park

Exeter City is a fair old distance away to say the least. A generally poor ground, St James' Park is not a trip that I do if City weren't playing there, something symbolised by the fact I've ever even been to the ground twice.

I’d only ever been to Devon a few times in my life and none of them were particularly joyful so you can imagine my delight when we were due to play Exeter on a TUESDAY NIGHT meaning that we wouldn’t be back to Lincoln until mid-morning. This was made even more tedious because I had college at 8:30am the next morning but you’ve got to make sacrifices for your club. So anyway, after an extremely long journey, we finally made it down to Exeter within minutes we were at the ground and seeing as we’d arrived nearly 2 hours early, we decided for a walk around the ground.

After finding sod all, I decided to make my way around to the turnstiles and then got in for £2, yep, £2, for an adult ticket but then came the part I wasn’t looking forward to, entering the smallest (in terms of height) terrace in the Football League. It’s a ridiculous terrace and even stood on the top step, my head was still below the crossbar and anyone who’s met me, knows I’m quite tall.

The only plus side about the terrace was that it stretched around onto the side of the pitch where it suddenly joined up with an all seated, but dilapidated stand and was shared between the home and away fans. It isn't an even stand though as the seats dip towards the far end, probably because of the housing behind the stand.

Opposite the away fans was a huge terrace, roughly the same size as the one at Halifax and the view from here must been quite good but in terms of quality, is not even close to the quality of the final stand. It’s not that different from Lincoln’s CO-OP stand albeit a bit smaller. The view from this stand is probably of a similar nature.

Atmosphere wise, Exeter is fairly average, only really loud when they're winning, otherwise pretty silent. In the second visit to this ground my opinion of Exeter fans went down somewhat when they got exceedingly anry because I dared to suggest on a video that they didn't sing all game long, even though I have the video evidence to prove that they didn't.

However, it is nigh on impossible to create an atmosphere in the away end, even if you take a LOT of fans, you‘d still be struggling. The programme was also a good read.

Whether I would come here on a random game is very debatable simply because of the distance thing but if I ever find myself living closer to that area, I still doubt I would go to this ground for a reason other than Lincoln playing there.
