2009 : Another year, more disappointment : May and June

May and June were generally quiet with only one match being played. Other than that it was mainly a time when numerous players left the club and four joined (and another on trial). The two months saw Dany N'Guessan, Adrian Patulea, Lee Beevers, Ben Wright, Geoff Horsfield and some less skillful players leave the club.

As you can guess, with only one game being in played in May, it was quite a quiet month that started with a 2-0 home defeat to Aldershot Town. City, and in particular Ben Wright, wasted numerous chances enough to win three or four games, let alone the one. Ben Wright would come to regret missing those numerous chances weeks later....but we'll come to that later.

Just before the game against Aldershot, Scott Kerr was named as the Player of the Season, Adrian Patulea finished second and Janos Kovacs came third. Rob Burch's fantastic performances on the road saw him named as the Away Player of the Season, Moses Swaibu won the Young Player of the Year, a tribute to his decent performances a few weeks earlier as he beat some regular first teamers to that award.

Then it came to contract renewal time. Sam Mullarkey, Dany N'Guessan and Adrian Patulea were all offered deals, but none of the three stayed at Sincil Bank. Ayden Duffy, Geoff Horsfield, Gary King, Martin Pembleton, Lee Beevers, Frank Sinclair and Owain Warlow were all told they would not be getting new contracts. Ben Wright was initially due for a new contract but in the space of 90 minutes he managed to chance Peter Jackson's mind. Jackson was going to offer Wright a contract but was so unimpressed by his numerous misses against Aldershot that he decided against offering him a new deal.

N'Guessan soon confirmed that he would be leaving for Leicester City, Patulea left for Leyton Orient, Sam Mullarkey went back into non-League and Lee Frecklington's move to Peterborough United was made permanent following a loan spell.

The first signing of the summer came in the form of Richard Butcher. Despite scoring a goal every four games from midfield for Notts County, he was deemed surplus to requirements and left Meadow Lane, joining City for a third time. He was joined at the beginning of June with Jamie Clarke, joining after spells with Blackburn, Accrington and Rotherham. A third signing quickly followed as Imps became the first team to sign a product of the Glenn Hoddle academy, Chris Fagan.

It was confirmed that the Imps would start their season with two games, at home to Barnet in the League and Barnsley in the Carling Cup.

Cian Hughton joined on trial in time for a tour of Germany and he was joined by Joe Heath from Nottingham Forest and that was the final news of May and June.
