2009 : Another year, more disappointment - October

October saw Chris Sutton officially take over at Sincil Bank and he wasted no time in replacing several members of the side. Despite winning the first two games, City's form soon slumped again. City also found out they would face Telford in the FA Cup this time.

With Chris Sutton having been appointed in late September, his first business was to bring in Adam Watts on loan from Fulham and he made his debut in a home game against Aldershot. In an entertaining game and City showed plenty of attacking intent, eventually finding their way through when Sergio Torres pounced seven minutes from time.

Chris Sutton's next signing came in the form of Anthony Pulis from Southampton, whereas Ian Pearce also signed a player contract after initially just being on a coaching contract. Pulis made his debut a few days later and Macclesfield and in truth, City were fortunate to win thanks to a very suspect penalty. It was converted by Rene Howe and the Imps appeared to be onwards and upwards.

Cian Hughton made his debut against Switzerland for the Republic of Ireland Under 21 side and he returned just in time for a trip to Northampton. This was a considerable less fortunate trip for City as Steve Guinan produced his usual habit of scoring against the Imps, the game ending 1-0. Adam Watts extended his loan soon after.

Torres went back to Peterborough after his loan spell finished, but he was replaced by two Aston Villa youngsters, Nathan Baker and Eric Lichaj. Khano Smith soon became Sutton's first permanent signing, joining following a trial. All three made their debuts against Torquay United, a game that ended goalless with the visitors missing numerous chances to gain a deserved lead.

The FA Cup draw was made a day later and the Imps were drawn away against a non-League side for the second year running. It would be either AFC Telford United or Blyth Spartans, both of the Conference North. Telford eventually won the replay 4-0.

Sergio Torres returned on loan before a 3-1 defeat at Morecambe thanks to goals from Drummond, Jevons and Mullin ended a relatively quiet month badly. Rene Howe scored the consolation before Lichaj got sent off.
