Imps joint top after shocking Skrill title favourites

Lincoln City recorded a victory over Forest Green Rovers on Saturday afternoon, a result that has sent waves of optimism through the Imps fans as it leaves the club joint 1st.

Both sides went into the game unbeaten and it was FGR that got the game underway, wasting an early corner before the Imps started to put a stamp of control on the game, having several corners before Alan Power hit the side netting from the edge of the box after an incisive run. Fairhurst shot well over the bar as City were enjoying a fair amount of possession against Hockaday's men.

Then, as I have written numerous times down the years, after being on the back foot, the visitors took the lead through their first shot on goal. Anthony Barry picked up the ball on the left and sent in a curling cross that deflected in off of Nat Brown. It was becoming a similar story to last season's game as the Imps were battering FGR but just couldn't score.

A quiet spell ensued before the Imps were then the benefactors of a deflected effort as a Newton fre kick fell to Fairhurst, his eventual shot was heading straight at the goalkeeper before a deflection took it away from him. It wasn't long before the Imps had a penalty shout as Hodgkiss appeared to handle a cross, but it was ignored by the referee.

Danny Rowe, fresh from scoring the winner on Tuesday night, almost scoreone of the best goals ever seen at Sincil Bank as he unleashed a long range dipping effort that went narrowly wide.  Nolan was booked just before the half despite winning the ball.

The second half started with FGR almost regaining their lead as Klukowski headed just wide after some good posession from the visitors. Boyce was booked for an alledged elbow. The second half was far closer than the first had been , with neither side really controlling the game.

Fairhurst had a fierce shot tipped over but other than that it was very quiet. With the game seemingly heading for a draw, the Imps managed to find a late, late winner. With four minutes left Newton went on a run before feeding through Fairhurst. The striker smashed home to give the Imps the lead.

FGR didn't find a response, leaving the Imps fourth after three games, joint top and already well clear of the drop zone.
